Hi I have a 2001 2.7 I4 with the 5spd manual. This is my first manual and I would like tips on the best way to drive it to maximize engine life. If there is another thread that covers this please inform.

I try to keep it at about 2500rpm and shift around 3200. Coming from an automatic i have always been told keep rpms low, but my friend who is more versed in driving manuals suggest to have higher rpms. What normal driving rpms should I be going for? Also if you have other tips for keeping the engine and transmission happy I’d love to hear them!

Regular maintenance like oil changes, proper amount of clean circulating coolant, and checking valve lash will do more for keeping your engine going than what rpm you drive at.

Congratulations on joining the 3 pedal club! :burnrubber:

In moderation, your friend is correct.

It all comes down to leverage:
You can pick up a heavy box from the floor or a high shelf, however it is a lot easier and less strain on your body to pick it up from counter height.

You use the gears the same way, keeping the engine at a comfortable mid RPM.

    General info:
Your foot is on the clutch only when using the clutch, don't let it rest there, same goes for your hand on the shifter.

Don't grip the shift knob with a death grip and "make" the transmission shift, instead grip it lightly and "ask" it to shift, this is both easier on the machine and makes you a smoother driver. Shift slowly and smoothly, this isn't a sports car.

"Lugging" the engine is when the RPM is too low for the work required, on the other hand there is no need to be winding the engine out to 5000 RPM on a regular basis.

Listen to the engine (radio off) as you drive under various conditions, after a while you will find the "sweet spot" in the 2000 to 3000 range where it likes to run.

Regular service with quality name brand lubricants and filters meeting specifications will keep things running smoothly for a long time. Your truck is probably overdue to have all the fluids changed out including the brake and coolant.

Hahaha yes im sure its overdue i got no service records when i bought it so ive slowly been replacing all the juices and other things that need to be done on a medium mileage tacoma (190000).

excellent tips! Love to get all the knowledge from the veterans!

I will have to work my way up to have the confidence to pop the cover and check the lash. That will be coming though!
