I have the same situation. My OEM compressor went out after 21 years of faithful service. It started chattering a lot and then finally stopped. Pressure readings indicated that the refrigerant was low and I did find a leak at the expansion valve connections indicating the the o-rings were no longer doing their job. My suspicion is that the compressor quit because of insufficient refrigerant but the chattering I was hearing was an indication of wear and imminent failure either because the compressor was worn, not getting enough lubricant because the refrigerant level was too low or both. In any event, I replaced the o-rings at the expansion valve and pulled the compressor to replace it. When I checked the compressor, it had no oil in it. The new one comes prefilled with 140 ml or 4.8 oz of lube. If you apply the formula for adding/removing oil from the new compressor prior to installation, you end up with removing zero (0) oz. of the oil from the new compressor. I'm concerned, however, that the other ac components have oil in them and that the system will be over charged if I left the 4.8 oz. in the compressor. I've read elsewhere that if the refrigerant is low, the oil will not be flowing properly throughout the system so finding little to no oil in the old compressor is not unusual. Should I remove all or some of the oil in the new compressor or should I just evacuate and recharge the system with the 4.8 oz of oil in the new compressor?
