I replaced the fan bracket pulley & the fan clutch. I thought I was seeing this pulley wobbling before & now I just need to make sure I’m not seeing stuff…. The difference between how the belts are riding….
Funny how when it’s a new Toyota part, I’ll look to everything else around it before questioning if it’s defective….

When I watch the pulley closest to the motor, the motor side rail doesn’t move but it looks like the radiator side rail does something. Is that rail smudged with paint or oil, something?

No. Both pulleys are just about brand new (end of February). You’re talking the radiator side of that inner pulley, yes? If so, that’s what I’m seeing. I’m also seeing the belt being a little off.

I wonder if the offending pulley was dropped and now the valley is closed up a bit?

I don't think it's wobbling. If you watch the backside it seems like it stays straight during the video. Only the front side is out of line. I think the front side is bent.

Hold a fixed object (wood shim...etc) near the pulley off front cover and check.

I sent the parts guy at the local Toyota dealer a video & got a replacement pulley.

Was it a bend or a wobble?

What was the issue with the pulley that the bad replacement replaced?

A bend? defect? I guess. That middle rim was thicker in one spot & actually made it off center…. He would have actually tested it had I not sent him the vid, so that’s as conclusive an answer he could give.

I had removed it & measured it with a caliper, top to bottom, however not bottom to the top of the middle rim.

All the belt markings & non symmetrical stuff like the fan area will play mind tricks, along with you being over cautious about your truck, think its fine but you truly cant diagnose stuff from a video....

I agree. In fact that’s what I thought was happening, “mind tricks”.

There’s a couple of things at play here…. 1. I’ve owned this truck for 17yrs & have been doing more involved work on it for 8. I’ve become in tuned to it. When something ain’t right, 4 times out of 5 something wasn’t right. 2. I’m not an expert. I’m learning. Many of the threads on here were of me posing a question about something not feeling/looking/sounding right & we figured it out. Some/many times they were pretty big deals.

The Toyota parts guy told me he had to test it. I decided to send the vid, not thinking it would replace testing, but just so he could see it in action on my truck. Maybe he’d say it was something else. I dunno. He said something ain’t right & swapped it out. & I got the feeling from my discussion with him prior to sending the vid, that they don’t easily warranty parts out.
& when ya think about it, what is most helpful on TW for diagnosing? Pics & vids….

Maybe it woulda been fine, maybe not. I bought that pulley in February & it would suck if I figured out it wasn’t fine come next March.

Bottom line is I totally respect when others choose to let stuff go or err on the side of things most likely being fine. For me, as I learn how one thing can affect another, it’s peace of mind to check out something that doesn’t feel/sound/look right as best I can & to do it sooner than later….

This truck has treated me great even throughout the years that I didn’t take care of it so well. I owe it to be thorough or if you will, overly thorough….
