Replace the relay to rule it out.

    Ahhaaa!

Imagine an electrical female socket designed to accommodate a specific size male spade. You shove something in fatter than what’s supposed to be in it. The female opening bends outward to accommodate it. You take it apart & put it back to original. Now the two parts will sorta connect but it’s not a good connection that’s going to provide good continuity 100% of the time.

To correct this problem you want to fix it so the relay can once again make good contact. I would have to see it to know what I would do. Perhaps depin the female connector. Or try bending it closed slightly in place. If you decide to try messing with it DEFINITELY disconnect the battery first.

Still I would correct that bad connection on the starter.

As I’m sure you now know, jam a wire into a connector, twisting & taping, wrapping wire around it are not good ways to get a good connection. Don’t feel bad, I fried a boost controller due to a bad ground connection myself. Live and learn.

Once I worked on a Chinese machine with about 200 male/female spade connections. No wiring diagram, no manufacturer to call. No replacement parts available. Every female spade was spread open due to vibration, a bunch of males had fallen out, wire colors didn’t match. I was the third person to work on it, got lucky and got everything plugged in correctly. Advised we can make a homemade wiring harness which would probably cost more than they paid for the machine. Or next time it breaks down, throw it away and buy something better.

I'll pick up a new relay. Seems like a good call.
I also canceled the Denso OEM replacement fuel pump and ordered a URD kit because why not. I've already blown past my maintenance budget for the year, and I'm chipping into build money.

Neither the starter relay or fuel pump could cause a p0335 though.

The relay is cheap but I'd hold off on the fuel pump, that's more expensive and we havent seen any evidence this is a fuel related issue.

You just put a crank sensor in it, wait and see if the symptom comes back before throwing more money
