Got my first taco with 252k miles yesterday and bought it with code p0136 code showing.

Haven't had a chance to see how much its effecting gas mileage but is she safe to drive? Spent about 4hrs running around yesterday with no discernible issues and haven't had it long enough to tell anything regarding the mpg.

Smells like an old truck when parked but nothing outrageous. Gave it an italian tune up on the test drive just to make sure all was good and she had no issues there.

Is this inline with some old honda codes of slap some black tape over it? I've seen tons of threads with people throwing this code with no resolution from a single OP which leads me to believe the black tape method ended up as the result

Doing nothing, closing your eyes & hoping it will go away isnt the answer.
Rolling the dice & swchwagging parts at it isnt either...
    Verify, properly diagnose & repair...
Ignoring it could cost you more at the end of the day...
    goodluck!

You bought it with a CEL, is there not smog laws in your state?
you dont have to pass smog inspection to transfer title?

I know not all states have a smog program, just asking for clarification as if your state does that really complicates your self inflicted situation.

On O2 sensors....they have a heater element that heats that sensor instantly up to temp

when the heater part inevitably fails...it can throw that code...

however when it heats up on its own it still works fine....

so you have to decide whether its worth a new $100 sensor that may/maynot reset the code again

may not even be the sensor....could be the wiring pigtail

If you get really bad gas milage...you might then have to replace sensor and/or wiring

No sir no emission risks over here

That is good to know, I came across prior threads mentioning that heating itself up will eventually fail but none that it continues to work once its up to temp. I reset the codes and am taking it to work tomorrow and we'll see if it pops back up. Minus the standard age related rust being by the coast it seems to be in perfect condition. Its in such good shape it makes me think the old owner wouldn't have ignored it unless his old mechanic told him don't worry about it but you never know

When tacos sit a long time.....think those heaters will fail normally

reason I know about these is those Scotty Kilmer videos.....
old toyotas have that code...a lot

when I bought my old tacoma...that O2 sensor was one of the 1st things I had to replace......must of been sitting awhile......since it had a blown HG
