I'm going back and forth between the 2 but don't know much about either! For example...Is the 4 cylinder in the 2024 an issue as opposed to the 2023 6 cylinder? I'd appreciate any help, advice, words of wisdom! LOL

Both are great trucks. The only issue with the 4 banger is it doesn't sound as pleasing as the v6. In both name and actual sound. 2024 is impressively loaded with tech compared to previous tacomas. Watch some youtube reviews for each generation and different trim options/packages.

    Is the power comparable though?

4th gens haven't been out long enough yet to know what long term reliability will be, on the other hand 3rd gens have and aside from some people not liking how the transmission behaves they have proven to be pretty solid trucks overall.

After having two 3rd gens and now a 4th gen, the 4th gen turbo 4 is more powerful and has more torque down low. The 8 speed automatic in the 4th gen also behaves much better than the 6 speed auto in the 3rd gen.

Honestly, if you can, test drive both.

    1st off, welcome to TW.

I'd guess you'd be very happy w/ either one. I have a '24 and love it---- wasn't initially thrilled at the idea of getting first year of new platform, but needed the truck and rolled the dice. So far, so good. One thing to keep in mind when doing your research is the ratio of complaints to positives---- since you're far more likely to hear from someone angry than someone happy, it may seem like there's a lot more bad out there than what there actually is (and that's not even factoring in YT'ers that only post doom and gloom vids for clicks). When gen 3 came out, many people were probably focusing on the problems and skeptical of the "new" Tacomas that are now considered super dependable "standards". Only time will tell if gen 4 is as reliable, but if you trust Toyota to stand behind them (I do), there may be posts like yours several years in the future from potential buyers asking about the concerns of getting a new gen 5 or should we stick to the old known and trusted gen 4:)

Good luck w/ whichever way you go.

For what it's worth, I had a 2000, and then a 2014. I was trying to decide between buying the reliability of a low mileage 2023 or a new 2025. After driving a ton of 23's and 25's back to back, the decision became clear for me. I thought the gen 4 engine and transmission was much more drivable and the gen 4 has a much more comfortable seating position. What helped me was just sitting in and driving a ton of them back to back...

I've had a 2019. Traded after 80,000 miles for a 2020 currently sitting at 108,000. Never had a problem in either truck. If I get another most likely going to be a 2023. Not that the 24 is a bad truck, Just prefer the proven reliability over uncertainty.

Had a '24 and traded it for a super low miles, like new '22. I liked the torque of the Gen 4 truck the most. I see why people talk about the 3rd Gen transmission hunting, as the torque curve is higher up in the RPM range, but I wouldn't say its underpowered - just have to drive it differently than the 4G. The 4G is almost more diesel-like with the peak torque at 1700 RPM. That's pretty nice! Conversely, the '24 also sounded like the engine was from a tractor but that's supposedly common with them.
My '24 had some glitches too, that might just be first year issues. My door panels rattled, even after trying various fixes, and my drivers door starting squeaking when opening/closing the doors like a 50 year old squarebody chevy. The integrated brake controller was finicky. Mine didn't work for some trailers and just fine for others. And yes, I did answer the questions correctly after the truck senses you hooked up a trailer.
And for whatever reason, the wiper motor(s) on the '24 sounded like they were out of an old VW Bug I owned waaaay back in college - so noisy you can hear the motor each time the wipers were on. I decided I wanted something more simple and proven, so I went to a 3rd Gen.
Not having one before, I found I immediately liked the dash and center console layout better than the 4G. More open feeling. The lighter grey color on the door panels, headliner, and seats may contribute to this as as well, vs the all dark grey color scheme in the 4G interior.
The 3rd gen also rode better which surprised me a lot - the coils on the 4th Gen should have given it a better ride, but my 3G rides nicer and handles just as well.
I put 8500 miles on the 4G over the course of 12 months and I struggled with my decision to trade it in for the slightly older truck. I'll see how much I like the 3G in a year as well, but so far I'm very happy with my changeover.

Interesting. I'm of two minds, and so bought the tried-and-true built-the-same-way-for-20-years T4R in 2020. I love it and will never sell it unless things get truly dire. I am very happy with it in every way, because I knew what to expect. But when I needed a new pickup, I started to think that I wanted to try the freshest versions. I did. And among the midsize group, it was the hybrid Tacoma and the high-trim Rangers that felt the best. Fuel economy was several MPGs better in the Tacoma, and, as much as I think a Ford truck is a quality truck, I liked the way the Taco drove better, ride, seating, power delivery. Plus, then I get to be a member of this very unique community. Not that not having one has stopped anyone.
