I recently picked up a fiberglass topper with a carpeted interior. Every time I touch the carpet, a thick dust cloud falls. At first, I thought it was just very dusty, but now I'm realizing it's the carpet itself shedding. Does anyone have experience with some kind of adhesive to spray over it to prevent it from shedding further? I'm open to any and all suggestions, as I plan on camping out of it soon and don't want to breathe it in while I sleep.

Update: I got impatient and sprayed 3M 77 adhesive all over it. Will report back when it dries

more than likely, you'll be best off scraping and re-covering it starting at the raw topper fiberglass. the dust is most likely the adhesive failing

Do you mean the adhesive holding the carpet to the fiberglass? I figured I'd probably have to rip it out, but might as well give something a try first.

if it's coming off from the carpet, it's likely not the carpet-to-fiberglass, but the carpet-to-carpet layer failing. really depends on the type of carpet they used. there's blown-on, and there's sheets. i've seen normal carpet bonding sheets fail in houses and cause plenty of dust.

It dried and it helped a little, perhaps another coat will help further.

I'm now realizing I'll probably cut it all out and paint the fiberglass. Not sure I want to enclose myself in there with whatever material is raining down.

Following up on this, has anyone ever pulled a carpet out of one of these? If so how bad of a process is it? I assume I’ll need to wear a mask. Should the fiberglass be sanded or can I just go at it with a thick layer of paint?

I would wear an N-95 respirator. Those particles are small.
