Thanks for the replies, I knew about changing the oil, and other upkeep that I must take to keep er running, but changing the fluid in the trans never occurred to me until it was too late. When the trans started having issues, every shop I asked about told me not to change the fluid and filter since the new fluid could damage the unit even further. So when the trans would not shift into reverse, I poured Lucas Transmission fix, and about 2 days later, the trans would shift into reverse, and the hard and late shifts were not as bad or long then about 6 months later the trans issues would come back again, so I kept doing this until finally stopped going into reverse.

I did this for about 5-6 years, and I am guessing over that entire time I put about 3-4 bottles of Lucas into the trans, but every time I did this the fluid color on the dip stick was the same as what was coming out of the Lucas bottle dark, red, and even thou I added 3-4 bottles throughout the fluid never overflowed, and I never saw any leaks on the ground.

I don’t plan on doing this on my Tacoma, so my goal is to keep it running as long as I can, hopefully for 20 +years. That way, in the year 2042, my Tacoma will be really out of date but still running strong. I don’t drive hard. I wonder if there are any additives I can add to the engine that will make it last longer, such as when changing oil, trans rear diff, power steering, radiator fluid etc, can I add additives to it in addition to the fluid it requires to help that component last longer? Maybe to not produce as much heat and cut down on friction? And I plan on following the maintenance schedule that Toyota provides.

 

And yes, having a V6 in a Frontier and going to a 4 in a Tacoma was different for me, being that the Frontier is a lot smaller than the Tacoma, but the Tacoma has a smaller engine, but I was able to pull the Frontier out of the mud with the Tacoma at least 3 times and one of those times the Frontier's rear axle was laying on the ground. But yea if I need to haul things around my property, I just use the Frontier. But I do get about 420 miles on a full tank on the Tacoma; the Frontier would give about 290, but the Tacoma's tank is bigger. Take off, I never really pushed the Frontier, I never got above 4,000 rpm, and the same with the Tacoma, but the shape the Frontier is in and its age, I think the Tacoma could take off faster, and maybe not allow the Frontier to catch up. Now, only paying a $150 monthly note for the Frontier, vs $454 for the Tacoma, I do miss that, but it will be paid off soon.

 

Not a Tacoma but my Yaris (spare ride and parts getter) just ticked over 440000 miles and still gets 32MPG. Only parts replaced were an alternator, an A/C compressor, and a rear wheel bearing. I splurged and did the water pump at 375K because I had the car apart to do the A/C and it was cheap! Tacoma? I don't know. Hit me up in 15 years!

That is impressive. What year is your Yaris? Original timing belt still on it or did you change it with the water pump?

 

It is a 2010 model and no timing belt on that one. One of my vehicle buying requirements is timing chain only. I know that is getting rarer and rarer but it was a strong selling point for the Tacoma.

To OP...DON"T ADD any stinkin additives. They're just marketing propoganda and for the most part BS.
Just do maintenance as per your Tacoma owners manual.
Even better, do your own oil and filter changes and check everything yourself on a regular basis.
This includes oil level, all other fluid levels, tire pressure and wheel lug nut torque.
