    Howdy yall,

    First time posting..

I recently inherited a 1998 3.4L , it has 179k, minimal rust, engine is strong. Everything is solid.. Except it ran a transmission code the other day - P0753 . I cleared the code, and it hasn’t popped back up since, and the transmission feels solid. The tranny fluid is dark brown, so im hesitant to change the fluid and make it worse.. What would y’all do?

    179k is not that bad

Code points to a direct solenoid (great)
Unk if that #2 is internal or possibly reachable from outside/with pan off

    1st thing is tranny fluid/filter

Now you’re going to have to decide by searching about the Internet Debate whether to flush complete system or not to flush

    IMO
I went with other members advice (212k on mine) to change tranny fluid a little bit at a time. Much less shock to the system/wearable internal clutch disks
That dark fluid, although dirty, holds shit ton of disk material…..that makes worn clutches work.

Personally, I would drain the fluid, drop the pan, remove and replace the metal screen filler, drop the valve body (take a picture before hand so you can reference it later), pull all the solenoids off (keeping notes of where each one go) to test and clean (soak in carb cleaner for an hour or two). I would let the trans continue to drain overnight and get as much fluid out as possible. I would also drain the ATF cooler at the radiator by pulling the lines. Reassemble everything the following day in reverse order and FIPG the pan, allowing the sealant to cured (24hrs) properly before topping off with ATF (I use Valoline). Drive the truck after topping off (5-6qts possible during initial fill) and check fluid level after a few miles. Shift through all the gear too. Within a week or two of driving surface streets and highway, I would drain the ATF and top off with new fluid and hope fresh fluids had reach the torque converter. I would continue that process one or two more times after until I see bright red fluid.

Hopefully dirty and contaminated fluids are out of the system and fix your issue.
