Hey fellas,

I've got a rattling sound coming from my transmission that’s been around longer than I’d like to admit, but it’s gotten more noticeable lately. I’m thinking it could be a bearing going bad, and figure I might as well take care of the clutch at the same time. Ideally, I’d like to tackle the job myself, but I’m having trouble finding solid writeups or videos specifically for our trucks.

Still, any additional info, tips, or guidance would be much appreciated.

Truck Details:

• 2011 Tacoma Regular Cab
• 5-speed manual (R155F transmission)
• 4x4
• URD Short Throw Shifter
• ~85,000 miles
• OME 2" lift and 235/85-16 Geolander M/T
• ARB front bumper
• ARE cap, typically no weight in the bed unless I'm out camping or moving materials.

Symptoms:

• Rattling noise at freeway speeds (50+ mph), only in 4th or 5th gear
• Happens only when coasting in gear (no noise under acceleration or in neutral)
• Noise is intermittent—doesn’t happen every time
• Seems to occur more frequently when the trans is warm
• If I drive straight to the freeway (~1 mile from home), it usually doesn’t happen
• If I drive around town first, then hit the freeway, it usually does

I’m thinking it could be the output shaft bearing or countershaft bearing. Anyone run into something similar?

Clutch Recommendations:
If I go through with the job, I’ll be using OEM parts where I can. However, I'm looking for a clutch that’s reliable for light/moderate off-roading (climbs, steps, ledges, etc. I'm in the southwest so mud isn't typical). The truck isn’t a daily driver, more for camping and trail use.
