Here’s mine I just pulled out. Looks ancient! Got a new one from Dorman OE Solutions and it’s the blower motor resistor kit. Pretty easy job now that it took me several years after getting the part to actually do it.

    Here’s the video I found.

Mine went out today. I'd take this off your hands if you still have it.

Fan only blowing on high. Thanks again to tacomaworld for solution.

Curious is most are replacing the fan at the same time. I saw some folks say the resistor blows due to too much amperage draw. My sense is that the original design has about a 10 year life span. I haven't had issues with the fan motor, no noises or anything and blows strong, so I'm thinking just replace resistor. Also, any quality issues with the dorman product?

Been discussed here many times before... the resistors themselves don't usually fail, the plug contacts get burned and stop conducting. You can usually scrape the burned contacts to get it to work again for awhile. And Toyota has a TSB to backfit the 2019+ resistor and plug with square socket and plug, TSB 0062-21. I just did that today on my 2009 Sport.

Replaced mine. Notice that the low setting is really low. Used to never use anything more than 1st or second setting. Now second seems to be where first used to be. High is still high. Everything works though and fixed my problem. Appreciate the tab being posted.

I was soldering and heat shrinking the way I used to from crutchfield instructions in the 90s and then discovered the combo solder and shrink where only heat gun is needed, huge ease of use improvement.

Replaced the resistor and wiring harness today with the kit recommended from Dorman. I contemplated the replacement wiring and square plug update from Toyota but they quoted me $223 CAD vs $43 for the Dorman part. I figured I would give it a go first. Oh and Toyota quoted $523 to replace the parts with labour and taxes, so I saved a fair bit doing it myself. My original resistor looked pretty close the the replacement one, and was much more modern looking than some of the ones shown in this thread.

This vid helped understand the steps really well: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hbbmGP61Ors

This is the first time this has failed on my truck, so hoping I get another 10 years. :D

Thank you so much man! My A/C // Heater started blowing only on max setting around a week ago and sure enough my HVAC blower motor resistor was corroded to all heck.

Blower motor resistor failure is a known issue to Toyota. Toyota recently re-engineered the blower motor resistor, it now has a square wire harness connection that requires replacing the resistor and wire harness. I purchase the resistor and connection online thru McGrath Toyota Elmhurst IL for $57.

Wiring is tricky because the re-engineered harness wires do not match the existing wire harness wires. A helpful installation video can be found at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vYLpq3yjDu0 Wiring diagram is at minute mark 12:05.

It is crazy that these tacomas have this issue. I put together a video on how to fix this issue and even address the cabin air intake with an old license plate and replacing the blower motor, resistor, and their harnesses if you were getting water in as well. Hope it helps some of you with this problem!

Hi all - new to the site. I just did this for my 2012 TRD and replaced the resistor and had to subsequently replace the wiring harness. I ordered parts from Olathe Toyota Parts:
Part Number Part Name Price Quantity Total
87138-04070 HVAC Blower Motor Resistor (Lower) Square Connector
    82141-04Q80 Wire, Instrument Panel

After I redid the wire connector and replaced the resistor, it started up and seemed to run fine but only on modes 1-3. Then after about 2 minutes it stopped working again completely…

very lost here and would appreciate any help. TIA!
