    Hi All,

I just want to create a thread on my Taco to document my build journey.

I first gained interest in the 4th gen Tacoma when it was first released last year. I was drawn by its muscular design especially the wheel well bulge in the front and rears that give it a very aggressive appearance. Only thing I disliked was the stock wheel and tires which gave the truck a very mild stance.

Like probably some of you I spent many hours researching the trim I wanted on YouTube and here on this forum. I was originally set on the TRD PRO but the iso seats was a hard no since it made the rear seats basically unusable. I needed a truck that can have my 6 year old who can sit comfortably along with my 5’4” wife in the back seats. I thought about maybe swapping the seats but it would be a headache to do a swap. Sooo I narrowed down to trailhunter and TRD OR. After researching the TH I decided to stick with the OR since it’s basically the same truck minus the old man emu shocks, steal rear bumper and the potentially annoying snorkel.

After spending a few weeks calling all the local dealers that were only offering MSRP or over I decided to broaden my search to 150 miles. I found a dealer in the next state over that gave me 10% under msrp and I put in a deposit. Purchasing was smooth and the truck that I grabbed had only the sprayed in bedliner and rear Tacoma black inserts from the port options. Very minimal and I didn’t mind those options so that was perfect. My truck is TRD Off-road hybrid with premium package.

First thing I needed to do was remove the front air dam which to me looked ridiculous. Truck should have high clearance and the front air dam defeats the purpose of a truck.

First 3 photos are from the first day of pick up.

2nd photo is my son helping me remove the air dam.

3rd photo is taking my BMW X5 to meet up with a forum member to purchase his TRD PRO rocker panels that he took off. I knew I was going to get bigger and wider tires and I figured this rocker panel would help with protecting the underbody panels from potential rock chips.

4th photo is my son holding up my Wildpeak AT4W 285/70/17 tires I ordered from TireRack.

5th photo is when my wheels from Race Relation Wheels 17x8.5 Matte Bronze RR2-H Flow Form with Zero Offset arrived.

6th and other photo is how it sits today.

    Build List
    • 17x8.5 Matte Bronze RRW RR2-H 0 offset
    • Falken Wildpea AT4W 285/70/17 SL
    • ARB rear recovery hooks
    • Bonobo front recovery hooks
    • Lastfit all weather mats
    • TripleAliner bed and tailgate mats

Trucks looking great. I wish I committed to bronze wheels on mine. For some easy mods to pull it all together I’d suggest wheeling off that trd decal and a quick coat of plastidip on the Toyota grill emblem to fully bronze/black out.

Those TRD Pro rocker protector is not going to do anything to protect the paint with those offset wheels. Just FYI.

I’m not expecting it to fully protect it. I have plans to apply ppf in the next week or so. so far 500 miles on my normal routes with the bigger tires and no issues with rockchips.

IMHO I liked the truck better in its stock configuration.

Yeah if you don’t like mods on your rides then this thread isn’t for you.

It looks great and well done!

I’m the kind of guy who likes little tweaks but basically sticks with substantially the factory setup.

Following along, I have the same Taco in Underground and just starting the mod process, so this is fun to see in action.

Removed the stock hood prop rods and replaced with Redline tuning gas spring struts. So much easier to hold the hood up and close. IMO must do mod first day of receiving your truck.

Paint protection film added on the rear quarters and side of the rear bumpers because my truck likes to fling up small rocks.

Just received and installed the Meso interior Dome lights that switch from bright white LED to red LED’s for preserving that night time vision.

Great looking truck. Did you leave the OEM PPF and just go above it? If so did you leave a small gap or did you overlap it a little?

I tried my best to continue it off of the OEM ppf but there is a very small gap. No overlaps

Man that thing has some serious rake. Is that stock? Mine was not that bad when new. I did however put on a leveling kit ASAP but curious.

It is factory stock suspension. It’s probably more enhanced due to the bigger tires. I don’t like squatted trucks so I prefer the rake.

Have you done this on the front bumper and hood too or just on the bedsides?

Just the bed side for now as that is the crucial part for now due to my tires. I’ll probably do the front soon but I don’t follow other cars too close so it’s a non issue.
