Yes, I've used that tactic before. Most recently with my wife's car purchase earlier this year - dealer had lowest advertised online price, but then had a bunch of add on stuff like wheel locks and window tint. They wouldn't meet our offer and we left. Long story short, we ended up negotiating a better deal with this place than any of the other dealers. So I leave things amicable, as what matters is the total overall cost even if it includes some stuff I'll not use or would remove.

I always say that if you don't walk out at least once, you're not getting the best deal.

In this instance, I'm not going to be ready to buy until later this month and perhaps might even wait longer. There's a lot of negotiation power in not needing to buy anything right away.

Have you checked Carmax or Carvana to see what your truck is worth right now? I'm in the process and I have two offers for what I paid two years ago, minus tax and delivery.

Yes, Carvana and KBB to get a guide as to value. Pretty good for a truck I've had for over eight years and almost 100k miles.

When I get serious about doing a deal, I'll go to a nearby Carmax for their offer. I've also looked on AutoTrader to see how similar trucks are priced for sale. Gotta know this stuff to be able to assess the dealer's trade offer - and in GA the tax is on the difference between trade-in and selling price, so a $23k trade-in offer is equivalent to selling elsewhere for $24,610.

Also, gotta go in knowing your finance options. Common dealer trick is to pad the interest rate. Know your alternative (local credit union) and your credit score. Know what Toyota / SETD is offering. See what the dealer offers.

Yes, thank you, they're on my radar. Good to know they're willing to work a deal.

I wonder how a dealership would react to two, three, or even five forum members trying to work a deal at the same time.

I purchased a 2025 SR5 4x4 crew cab. I think the only add-ons were heated seats and floor mats. I paid $38,503 out the door after taxes, dealer fees and all the BS. I did get the 750.00 discount for military service. I did not get any extras such as extended warranty or gap insurance. They gave me payoff on my 2024 tundra TRD off road ( 44,500) so it did not affect price. They discounted it 8400.00. I thought it was a pretty decent deal.

For work, but got a nice one. TRD OffRoad Premium, with a hard tonneau cover and all BC taxes: just over $75,000 CDN.

edit: Canada , so by default 4x4 double cab. Automatic transmission without the hybrid.

I think it’s a reasonable deal the best I have seen TSRP discounted is around 5K and that’s hard to find. I think you would be hard pressed to find a better deal so if you like the truck IMO buy it.

Edit: What you are calling “market value” is that TSRP?

I would be inclined to think so. They sent me a photo of a worksheet of sorts titled "Cash Deal Structure" but they took the photo as to "hide" the descriptions of what some of these charges actually are. It was like a huge struggle to even get them to tell me what they were for and between the Title and Tags fee plus that ridiculous window etching they slid in another $1100.00 or so. I'm inclined to tell them to shove it but I've been shopping for 9 months and it is exactly what I wanted, plus I hate to throw the deal away as things may get much worse soon with proposed price increases from the tariffs.

As long as the “market value” is not TSRP marked up and then discounted if so I would walk especially since they are not wanting to be transparent with you.

Go to Toyota.com and build the exact same truck and see what Toyota says the TSRP is.

It is very close, like $130 higher than what Toyota.com shows. I added all the options, the only thing it could be is the owners portfolio. I'm quite confident that nothing is free these days.

Here's a TRD Sport premium package for an advertised discounted price of $49,730. You can probably get them to discount a little more. It's in Maryland, so you'd have to drive, but might be worth checking out.

How does "market value" compare to TSRP? Go to the dealer's website or find it via https://www.toyota.com/search-inventory/model/tacoma/

That'll tell you the config and base pricing, giving you better ability to assess the deal.

wow, check this out, give them $54k out the door take it or leave it, give them your phone number and walk out, they will call, that $799 etched bullshit they can let go rather than losing a sale. Just try it, work for me many time, final counter off and walk out. In fact I think you can go lower than that. From what I've seen lately at dealers around the country.

    Yes.

My personal philosophy is that if you don’t walk out (politely) at least once, you’re not getting the best deal.

Best was the time the sales guy came scrambling to catch me as I was getting in my car to leave. LOL
