Hey y'all, long time lurker. I've consulted this place for ages to troubleshoot issues. On my 2nd Tacoma, first was an immortal '04.

I'm at 152k on my 2019 2WD crewcab SR and badly need to refresh rear shocks and front coilovers/struts. I'm seeking stock ride and was trying to find KYB pre-assembled units....kept running into an issue. On rockauto they're listed for either 4wd or 2wd and they don't have the latter. No one does. Even on eBay a lot of the shocks have 7 pages of compatible vehicles and they'll all be 4wd models.

I was under the impression the shocks and struts were the same aside from the TRD OR suspensions? Can someone let me know if I order "4wd" KYB's that they'll fit?

I spent an hour trying to find the answer on here and broke down to just make an account and ask.

Since there is not physical difference between the suspension and frames of a 4wd and a 2wd on 3rd gens, the struts and shocks will interchange. The only difference might be the valving or front spring rate.

As you can see here, from Toyota for the front shock, they will work with either 2wd or 4wd.

Thanks for your reply. I’m looking specifically at assembled coilovers so I’m guessing those designated “4wd” have a heavier rated spring.

KYB’s website shows a separate part number for 2wd assembled coilovers than they do 4wd. Trouble is none of their retail partners carry it.

I have a similar question. A shop replaced the factory struts on my 2014 PreRunner 2.7 yesterday. It's riding a bit higher, maybe an inch or two, in the front.

The part number from the front left strut is G57133. Googling that, it's difficult to tell if this is the right strut for my truck. Gabriel's part finder lists that as compatible with my truck, and the applications list for that part includes "4WD" and "Exc. Off Road & Sport Models".

I'm not sure if I should expect it to settle a bit or if it's just the wrong strut. The spring does look beefier than what was on there originally. Does anyone know if there's a difference between the springs on a 4wd V6 model vs a 2wd I4 PreRunner? How much should a new strut settle?

3rd gen struts will fit in a 2nd gen truck (6 lug). The difference will be an inch in extra height. The aftermarket might not show this difference in interchange.

As for spring settling, that depends on the quality of the spring material and wheather they were preloaded to reduce settling.
