They are only like $9 each from your local toyota dealer.

 

I'm unable to source them locally they won't release it because I don't have a TRD pro

 

Some dealerships are stupid. If you go up to the 1in oem lift blocks from the lift kit they aren't pro specific and I found actually have better shock options. Not much out there the right length for a 1/2" block but there are 5125s and other options that are prefect with a 1in block and give you full travel range of the oem leaf springs.

 

Some people have had luck with finding a vin from a for sale listing online and entering that when ordering.....

They are not manually controlled by Toyota. Your dealer can order them or try elsewhere.

 

PT82A-35210 is the 1in block.

 

If you have a 3rd gen with oem leaf springs and a 1in oem block I found the bilstein 5125s part number

33-230337 to be the right length for full travel. Adds about 1/2" of extra droop over my stock trd off-road suspension.

If you run stock length shocks(including stock length 5100s or 5160s) with the lift block you will lose 1in of droop. With the 1/2in block there weren't any appropriate length bilstein shocks so you end up losing droop over stock. The OEM Pro shocks would probably be a good choice and there may be some FOX options but I was looking for a longer life and less expensive option.

If you go 5125s they come with the wrong bushings and sleeves for the axle side connection. I milled mine down but I am sure there is a bilstein part number for the proper bushing/sleeve pack. I know some dealers will include them if you tell them what truck you have.

What do you mean by "losing droop over stock" if you use 5100s with a block lift?

 

Maybe it is better described as losing suspension travel.

Your up travel is fixed because it is determined by the location of the top of the leaf spring and bump stop which don't move when adding a block. Your lower shock mount does move down by the thickness of the block so with a stock length shock and a 1in block you lose 1in of shock travel. Your full droop point is the same as it was before the block but your ride height is moved down.

Does that make sense? Hard to describe without visual aids.

 

Yea - "Losing travel" makes more sense. I get what you are saying. I was however under the impression that standard 5100s can handle up to a 2" lift without any travel loss. Have read that in multiple places. I also have a 2020 Taco w/ 3 leaf AAL (no overload)+ a 1" block in the back and standard 5100s, which goes wheeling in Colorado regularly on level 4/5 trails, and I have never had a problem with travel. Works perfect.

 

The block does allow you to run a longer shock though. A 1in block means you can run a shock with a compressed length 1in longer than stock which will have a longer extended length and more overal travel.

The oem springs have about 1/2" of extra travel/droop that the stock length trd off-road shocks don't allow you to use. The 5125 part number I listed above give you about half an inch more overal travel than a stock trd off road and since their compressed length is an inch longer. Running stock length 5100s would give you an inch and a half less travel/droop than they do.

 

The lift amount is a horrible metric because there are so many ways to get it. It is basically just a meaningless marketing claim. If it is a higher arch leaf pack that is the same thickness as stock then I guess they are technically right but even then your ride height is 2in closer to your shocks reaching full extension and you are probably severely limiting your leaf packs extension.

Honestly not suprised that it works fine for you but with your current setup you do have about an inch less suspension travel than a stock trd off-road.

Not all situations let you use the full leaf travel anyway as when you stuff one wheel and droop the other things get bound up but I personally dont like my shocks being the limit.

On the plus side 5125s are an easy relatively inexpensive upgrade that will give you more travel if you want to do it at some point.

 

If your wheeling slow there honestly might not be much difference. Where you will notice it is when hitting bumps at higher speed that cause your shocks to top out. Might not be enough to matter but the longer shock also means more oil and mass so a bit more resistance to shock fade. Also the 5125s are can up so a little less prone to rock damage.

 

Interesting - I may end up snagging a set of 5125s. Then again I doubt it will make any noticeable difference given what I do with the truck. Good info nonetheless fellas thank you.
