Someone asked about the dealerships. We live in Atlanta, GA. First place was World Toyota who was absolutely horrible; I will never go back there even though it's up the street from my house. The second was in Sandy Springs. They were much better but still said the same thing.

If you’re in the Atlanta area, go see Cherokee County Toyota, specifically the service advisor named Christian. He and his team are excellent at diagnosing.

So the non dealership place did not detect an error codes, correct?

I would ask the dealer what codes they pulled and are using as proof the canistser is bad

This is a key thing, if it isnt setting any codes now I would not park it on a hill and try to recreate it. I would go back with an unfailing truck to the dealer as that is proof the cansister isnt damaged that something else is going on. Be sure no codes are present

That will probably be my next step. I'm going to take to Toyota in Marietta since it's a lot closer. I drove it this morning and it sputtered while I was driving it which is different than what happened before (full stall while idling). No codes came up that I could see. I took to the non-Toyota place that has the Toyota scanner so they can see the codes. Hopefully, the computer caught something on when it sputtered (we know the timing).

Thank you to whoever recommended Marietta Toyota. The truck broke down again Friday morning and I took it to them. Steve was the service rep and Buddy worked on it. Steve, who is also awesome, agreed that Buddy is the best and would be similar to having the truck looked at by the Toyota corporate field techs. And guess what! He found out the issue. There was a malfunctioning valve and they are fixing everything within warranty. I'm still beyond annoyed that World Toyota and Sandy Springs didn't find it. At least I will have my truck back tomorrow and it should be good to go!

That would be me and you are welcome! I knew you would be impressed with Buddy he’s probably one of the best Techs in the metro area. I’m glad he found the problem and for curiosity what valve are we talking about?

Not sure which valve. They just said it was stuck in an open position. I think that's why we had issues when the truck was parked on our hill. I will find out which valve specifically when I pick it up tomorrow. Thanks again!

Imagine that, there WAS an actual mechanical issue that WAS covered under the manufacturer AND Federal emission warranty. And this is why so many dealers AND mechanics catch deservedly bad reputations. To bad the Feds didn't get involved and then go after Toyota and force a recall and repair/replace campaign. [more because the customer/s get financially jacked with no lube and both Toyota and the dealer/mechanic financially are enriched to a far higher degree.]

In my mind, OP is owed any monies spent at the initial dealer back for a failure to actually inspect and diagnose they system, I guarantee they pencil whipped as much of the procedure as they could.

Truck still in the shop, but we finally have confirmation that Toyota will fix the truck WITHIN warranty. Dealership says a valve is stuck open within the charcoal canister. What's strange is that Toyota corporate told the dealer who told me I get ONE fix like this over the life of the car which still makes it sound like we did something. We may never know since they are replacing the whole system and sending it back to corporate who can open it up and will examine it. I'm going to talk with corporate and see if I can get some details on what they find in the old canister. Otherwise, I guess I'm going to have to take a video every time I get gas to show I didn't overfill the gas tank. Unbelievable. It's not the Marietta dealership. They have been awesome and I won't take it anywhere else.

I'm not a car/truck person so I hope the above makes sense. I really appreciate all the comments and help from everyone. I wouldn't have found Buddy without all of you!

Did you file a complaint with NHTSA? https://www.nhtsa.gov/vehicle/2024/TOYOTA/TACOMA/PU%252FCC/4WD

An owner in FL submitted this complaint regarding a possible faulty fuel pump. https://www.nhtsa.gov/?nhtsaId=11655467

If they have ongoing issues with things like this, Toyota is going to be in EPA/CARB/NHTSA trouble big time if they decide to refuse repairs on a 100% covered emission device which could also be a safety issue. They WILL get sued if they mess with the wrong person who decides to push the issue with the feds. It's not a ''we'll be nice and goodwill this'' type of problem, it's absolutely covered by regs far higher then some dealer or Toyota.

Keeps me from wanting this engine or emission system if their attitude is akin to H&K's ''you suck and we hate you but we still want you to buy our overpriced junk.''

The dealer is full of it. Emissions are heavily regulated. Imagine filing a compliant with your Air Resource Board for a manufacture failing to fix a new vehicle, or only providing a one time repair. For them to say this is a one time fix is ludicrous, imho. All they're going to do is replace, because the part is faulty. Good luck.

edit - I just read the previous 2 posts. I was replying to my alert...

Today hopefully late afternoon. The part, which Toyota corporate was not sending, finally arrived this morning. I should be able to pick it up tomorrow morning.

Whatever dealerships said that it was your fault need to be punished. I'm not one to be sue happy but the runaround you've been thru definitely deserves some payback. You've gone way out of your way.
