I hear ya, but if you can drive a manual I would go that direction. But I wouldn't buy a used auto with 200K...ever.

Don't get me wrong, I have taken risks on high mileage used parts in the past because I was doing the labor. And that's a fine way to go. But the older I get the less I take that risk. If you get a deal and can do the installation (and possible replacement again) I say go for it. But a used auto is always a crapshoot.

The A340F is a pretty stout transmission, ( still a gamble because you never know ) but if it never overheated and the fluid was changed a few times and it wasn’t abused . They can go for a very long time

Even better...neighbors ask to borrow a truck (as if) and you just ask if they can drive stick. Problem solved.

It's that "what's the ATF taste like" part that is often the problem. In my experience only "car guys" change ATF. But these are old enough that it's not out of the question that someone took care of it. But nothing sucks more than draining ancient ATF. All the stink, and sometimes you just watch the friction material just leave.

Ok, I’ll bite and be the only useful one in the thread for @razzo .

your 2001 pre runner 2wd automatic is an A340E
    The 4x4 is an A340F

output shafts are different (spline and/or length, that’s for you to do deeper research).

either way if you keep and adapt your E transmission or swap the F over, you’re going to need to move or get a new crossmember(s) to support the transfer case and transmission.

you need an ECU that is compatible with your 2001 engine as well as the driveline you choose.

lastly, the transfer case in the earlier (before 2002 or 2003) were J-shift pattern and the later (2003-2004) were mostly or all the “2-4 auto select” push button style.
These transfer cases have different sensors and plugs.

There are MANY 4x4 conversion threads on here with full parts lists and specifics on the different years and models (4Runner) parts that will work.

start searching. It’s a lot of work.
