We are still under drought so as annoying as it is, it's much needed. They said localized flooding is a possibility in some areas o_O

I ended up next to a Ferrari with California plates at a red light on my way home from work yesterday; I don’t know if he drove it all the way across country or what, but usually the rich people around here with cars like this register them in Florida or Montana for purposes of lower taxes and avoiding inspection. I feel like California is the worst place to register an exotic car, for numerous reasons!

From what I've been reading that Montana loophole is getting shut down soon. States are tired of loosing tax revenues.

I swear every time I was in West Chester there was an abundance of fancy sports and supercars running around like nothing. That place is definitely out of my tax bracket o_O

States really need to stop being dickheads to car enthusiasts then. That’s the way I see it. Luckily, it’s still cheap to register a 2010 Taco in PA for two years!

This has little to nothing to do with being an enthusiast. It's all about money. PA vehicle registration is based only type of vehicle and weight class. A lot of states vehicle registration is based on "book value" so the higher price of the car the more expensive the registration. I've noticed our registration costs have been going up annually for the past few years and quite honestly that's even getting old.

I California, motorcycles are exempt from emissions testing there, but all gas-powered vehicles newer than 1975 registered in certain counties must pass smog. There is no loophole for antique vehicles. At least Jersey stopped emissions testing on vehicles older than 1996…

Had to edit that one a little bit. Being so close to the border I've recently seen the spike in MD registration cost :goingcrazy:

I'm also glad I live in a non-emissions county. That crap is just a racket IMO.

My mechanic tells me that as long as your CEL isn’t on, and factory emissions equipment is intact, you’re gonna pass; I agree with safety inspections, but not emissions testing.

MA is a fixed $60 per 2 yrs for registering a regular vehicle, but then we get hit with excise tax yearly.

That's what I say about living in MA, pretty much similar bullshit to CA but at least they don't get snow!

I can live with emissions and safety. Here in MA they don't do emissions on either 15 yrs old and back or older than 15 yrs..I forget how it's written. It's also every other year for emissions. I'm not sure this October if mine gets emissions or not, as we get one sticker for everything.

Safety I agree with bigtime. Not everyone cares enough to drive a safe vehicle, and that matters to others too. A coworker once drove me home and his wipers were so bad he could barely see, but refused to replace them even when I offered to do it for him.

What sucks is the costs increase and it goes in the wrong pocket. A friend once told me when it was $15 (about 30 yrs ago) the shop got roughly half of that at $7. It went up to $27 or $29 about 15-20 yrs ago and the shop got about $6.50 or so. It recently jumped to $35-40 and the shop gets $6. Think about this, you have to do 3 an hour just to pay the person who's probably making $15-18 an hour to break even on the labour..not to mention tying up the bay, the machine, blah blah. Small wonder why a lot of stations have gotten away from them.

Not sure if it's still like this perhaps someone here can update me about it. At one time Delaware state safety inspections were done by state police mechanics and it was just a pass or fail. They didn't do the repairs so no financial incentive to find stuff wrong so they could make money from you. That's the big issue I have with the whole program. State inspections being done by someone with a financial incentive to find things wrong with your vehicle. I've had places tell me I soon needed brakes and when I asked what the linings measure they told me 4/32" That still means 2/32" left to go before the code says to replace them.

MA is done by those who have the incentive, though IDK if there are standalone places as well. Never had to look for one.
