I just bought a dashcam to replace my old one. This new one has some features that require it to have constant power. I guess that is some sort of protection if its parked and gets bumped.

    So two questions...
    1) I only drive my truck a couple of times per week for about two hours each trip. Will a dashcam with continuous power needs drain my battery?

    2) Other than on the battery itself, were can I find unswitched power in the cabin?

    Thanks!

Not sure but I don't drive mine often and haven't had issues.

Power lock fuse inside the cab is what I tapped for mine. Even if yours doesn't have power locks it ought to work.

I have mine on continuous power and don’t have any issues. Sometimes I don’t drive the truck for 2 weeks and don’t have any problems.

Edit: I have a Viofo A119 dual channel

Mine is a Viofo A129 dual..he should be good to go. Mine gets driven a few times a week but usually just a few miles.

That could be another option. Not sure what year OP's truck is, some of the 3G I believe had a power port on the mirror

I tend to avoid the USB port. Aftermarket plugs have a tendency to spread out the connectors in the port resulting in intermittent connections by the dealer or emission checks.

My power at the mirror isn't full time, it's ignition controlled.

There’s some unswitched fuses in the fuse block under the dash. A fuse tap makes quick work of it.

Running my Garmin dash cams off of OBD, no issues so far. If my '06 has it, I would imagine most 2nd gen's do

Gotcha, thanks for the information sir.

Could be an option as well, I run my UltraGauge there so I didn't think of it

I run a blackvue dash cam and bought the voltage shutoff switch box that will kill power to the camera if voltage drops below 12.2V, you can change the settings to cut off power at different voltages and times which is nice.
Here's a link if you want.

So I bought an auto-shut off for the dashcam with unswitched power from the fuse block. Will be installing everything this week. Thanks for all the replies.
