Between 60" or 68" crossbars, 60" seems to be common but haven't found any pictures of the 68" cross bars on the roof. Considering the wider bars for the option to fit additional kayaks. According to Yakima's website, the HD bars seem to be rated up to 220 or 300 lbs (off-road) vs. 165 lbs for the Jetstream cross bars (https://yakima.com/pages/crossbar-basics), but it's not clear if that's the rating for use in the roof rack system since these bars can also be used for a bed rack.

    ARE Shell with Yakima Racks
I had the Yakima Overhaul HD rack on my truck before I bought an ARE Shell. I had 68" long HD Bars on that bed rack to carry two 16 ft. lg. tandem canoes side - by - side. I installed both HD crossbars on the shell with Baseline towers. I added a third crossbar over the front of the cab using a 60" long roundbar on Baseline towers so I could still carry a long canoe. I didn't put a 68" long crossbar over the cab because that would be a "head bonker". The longer crossbar sticks out just far enough that every time you get out of the truck you'll hit your head on the end of the rack if you're not careful. A front passenger has the same issue when exiting your truck.

Before there were ready made roof racks made by Yakima and Thule I used the old Quick-n-Easy aluminum brackets with 2 x 4's for crossbars. These worked well on cars and trucks with rain gutters. If the 2 x 4's were much longer than the width of your vehicle they were big time "head bonkers". I'm six feet tall and would need to duck under the crossbars on my brother's VW Rabbit whenever I got out of his car.

Here is a pic of my rack with 72" jet stream bars. I personally think this is just about perfect as it gives plenty of room outside of the towers for mounting accessories.PXL_20250514_155114869.MP.jpg
