Everytime I start my 02 tacoma, a belt screeches, and then it will stop as soon as I let the clutch out a little in gear, the screech stops. My belts are really tight and I don't want to tighten them any more.

    Any ideas? Thank you!

Maybe it's the TOB, not a belt.

New belts? If you're sure they're tight isolate where it's coming from (I know, goes away before you can get the hood up.) Have someone start it for you while you look. I would bet it's the alternator bearings but I now have a spare alternator because it indeed turned out to be the belts. Have a look at this recent thread.

I've had belts screech when they (or the pulley) are dirty. I'd clean them up and the screech would stop. It's always good to start with the easiest possible fixes :)

    He means throw out bearing.

Put her in neutral and let the clucth out then start her and see if the screech goes away.

my TOB had annoying squeal.....like sitting at a red light not rotational with engine RPM's(not belts)

after some experimenting, i found if i pressed clutch pedal down less than a 1/4 throw down....squeal went away
(didnt matter if gear or not)

for quick fix, i adjusted my clutch pedal throw
later when clutch was replaced.....RR'd every part disk/PP/pilot and TO bearings

I can't start her unless the clutch is in.

Ok I'll just loosen the alt belt and spin the alt and maybe I might be able to feel any roughness in the bearings. Thank!

Does your truck have a "Clutch Cancel" button?

It allows you to start the truck in gear (or out) with the clutch out. Helpful on a hill in 4lo for example. You just turn the key and your truck starts climbing as the motor starts.

Try spraying soapy water or something on each belt one by one, if the noise goes away that will at least tell you if its the belt wearing out or not.

Guys, I took a 7 hour round trip with my truck today, pulling a trailer. First half hour it would squeal on and off then it stopped. I think I blew the crap out of something because so far it hasn't squealed. Thank you for your informative replies!!!
