can new members start threads?

I tried starting a thread in general area and now I don't see it.

You can't post in B/S/T until you have 50 legit posts in other areas. But outside of that you should be fine.

Click on your name and you'll see this



Then click on 'messages' and it will show all you have done

 

Yes, you can start threads anywhere except the Buy/Sell/Trade sections providing it doesn't violate the forum rules.

Yes they can. In fact many new members start one, trigger a 5 page "discussion" and then are never seen again.

If you indeed started a thread and it got deleted you would have to ask why here.

Maybe along with the 50 post BST rule, we add a '50 post to start a thread' rule

Because you very likely created either a stealth For Sale/Wanted thread or an actual For Sale/Wanted thread. The former is prohibited by new users and the latter is prohibited because it's in the wrong subforum.
No big brain power needed to suss this out, really.
