I'm a big believer in isolation valves too.

All my years in industry I don't ever remember once saying "I wish they hadn't included these valves/unions/extra ports".


I do remember saying "why the couldn't the , , included just one whatever as I was having what should have been an simple job turning into an epic pain in the @$$.

 

I've got valves everywhere with more to go once I finish replacing all the old copper in the house. Mostly for repair, but if something happens when I'm not home someone else can shut that affected area off and still use the rest of the system. The 1/2 bath I added you can isolate the water there. Even the ice maker for the fridge I have a valve in the basement along with the one behind the fridge. If I'm at work I don't expect mother to be able to pull the fridge out to shut the water off if SHTF. Go to the basement and boom, valve.

When I was redoing the water softener system I did place a tee off the filter to go to the hose bibbs for just regular water. Not that you get much salt in the water out of modern softeners, but a trace. The front hose bibb is fed off the rainwater cistern while the bibb at the back of the house is off the well. It seems like a complicated system I've done, but doesn't take much to figure it out.

 

There was a water leak in one of the 10 story buildings on campus. There wasn't a shut off valve to isolate the floor so they had to drain the entire building. They added shut offs when the repair was made.

 

In completely other news, trying to makes heads or tails of the London Underground system when you're not used to using public transportation is proving difficult.

 

At the way back job we had a plumbing firm who did all of the major production installs.

The foreman, who was there since day one, told me:

"We spec out a job including isolation valves & extra ports so we can add equipment at a later time - quickly and at a lower cost.

They (management) reject the proposal wanting a lower up front cost so we remove the extras.

6 months later we are adding the equipment and have to drain the system, add valves and ports to do the job."

MIND THE GAP!

I’m not sure how you do with tech but I found the apps are very convenient for transportation versus traditional maps. The tube system in London is complex and detailed for sure. “TfL Go” I believe is the app.

 

I keep coming across Citymapper so I have that one installed.

 

I remember one was particularly convenient. You could just enter where you were and where you wanted to be, it would put out the exact trains and stops you needed.

Good afternoon friends! Hope Sunday has been good so far, have a blessed rest of the day

 

We didn’t start this project until after 3:00.

All I was gonna do is dig where the hydrant would be. Once I realized the ground was moist to about 30” I said I’ll be back and went and got the skidsteer

The fork worked pretty good, it at least loosened where we needed to dig

 

I saw a small trencher attachment that operated off of a chainsaw.. I saw it on Instagram though so I don't have a current link to it or anything. Seems handy for small projects. though

 

in clay and root-infested digging paths, i've used a 24" 9tpi pruning blade on a sawzall for that before. also used a hammer drill as well...

always fun to need to explain to the boss what's taking so long when we're carving clay out like year-old ice cream.
