Was replacing the complete steering rack on my 99 PreRunner 2.7L and the nut on the pressure line would not spin. Thinking of the next best alternative, I disconnected the top of the line at the power steering pump and just spun the entire line off the rack. New rack is back in and I'm a little confused on reconnecting the pressure hose. I had one copper washer between the hose fitting and the pump, but nothing between the banjo bolt and the fitting. I went to the parts diagrams and I couldn't find the exact setup, but there appear to be two in most diagrams. Can anyone confirm that there should be two? One on either side of the fitting.20160531_204558.jpg

And yes, even though I only had one washer, I dropped it during reassembly and can't find it. When I was searching for the dropped washer, I found the tiny brass nub in the far left of the picture. I don't know if I dropped it or if the previous owner had dropped it there at some point. If it didn't fit so neatly into the end of the banjo bolt, I wouldn't be questioning its use. So my questions are; 1) what is this? 2) is it part of the connection of the pressure line to the power steering pump?

    Any help is greatly appreciated.

That nub is required for the vacuum connection to the intake manifold (2 vacuum hoses). The nub goes inside the High Pressure hose (round part) and then the vacuum device (I forget the name of that part) goes on the line. There should be TWO (2) washers, one on each side of the High Pressure line, and you definitely need those.

That was extremely helpful, thank you kindly. In replacing the two copper washers, can I get those from any parts store or do I need to get them straight from Toyota?

GATES 348375 is a PS Pump Seal Kit ($12 bucks), it comes with the banjo bolt washers. I'm sure you can get the washers at the parts store, but you will need to take the banjo bolt and make sure they are sized appropriately.

What vacuum connection? Please inform me. After researching it since mine fell out too when I was rebuilding my 2001 Tacoma P/S pump, the Nub with the nipple end goes in first and seats in the hole so the conical side can insert into the end of the union bolt. The 2003 Tacoma FSM does not show it at all, I think I found it on a 2004 Tacoma diagram of the power steering system. The local Toyota parts department says it has been discontinued. I have the P/N for it somewhere :(. Since it was not listed in the FSM, I was hesitant about reinstalling it, as with it installed there is barely enough room to get enough torque to get a good seal without it leaking.

Update. After I reinstalled the Nub with 2 new gaskets the leak seemed to stop but when I started the engine and pressurized the system it came back.as a squirt. So I removed the nub and doubled up on the gaskets, (2 on top and 2 on bottom), torqued the union bolt to 36 ftlbs and the leaking stopped.
