I’m fixing a torn tie Rod boot and holy moly. This tie Rod nut is STUCK. Do my clamps look to be correct? I’ve seen people clamp onto the inner tie Rod portion but not sure if it matters.

I’ve tried a torch. Maybe I need a better one? Are pipe wrenches really all that? These are adjustable Vice grips that are super tight. Thanks

You’re gonna be much better off with wrenches and not vice grips

Install the outer tie rod end back into the steering knuckle and tighten the nut a little, then use the correct size wrench, not vise grips on the jam nut to loosen it, you can also tap the wrench with a hammer to help jar it loose...

Would be easier to place back ball joint, will help hold in place, I am serious turn the nut right, it will move upwards making it easier to loosen tie rod end

The tie rod jam nut takes a lot more effort to loosen than what you can muster with vise grips. Don't need a torch, as the threads are blind and usually not rusted.

Put the tie rod end back in the knuckle and tighten the nut a bit - you'll be using both hands on the jam nut.

I use a 22mm flare nut wrench on the jam nut, then loop another large wrench on the end for leverage, total moment arm about 18". A wrench extender works too. A large pipe wrench of similar length should work but will chew up the jam nut, so you should have a replacement jam nut on hand.

This sounds like the plan honestly. Quick question though, which way should I turn on this thing? Someone in this thread said I need to turn right to move it up? Guess that sounds right cause thats how it will separate itself from the outer tie rod.

Looking toward the steering rack, you'd turn the jam nut clockwise to move it away from the outer tie rod end.

If you are still messing with this, spray some penetrating oil on it and walk away for a day, try again, if still a no go then spray it again and walk away for longer....

This is exactly what I needed. Couldn't have done it without the wrench extender though. I'll be using this a lot, THANK YOU
