    2.5gen is the best gen.

Consider adjusting the SAIS to make it less of a potential long-term issue. (Hewitt-Tech solution?)

SAIS = Secondary Air Injection System, a complicated emissions-control subsystem that Toyota added to 2011-and-later 2nd gens. It is prone to certain annoying failure modes that can be disproportionately costly to fix. Not an immediate urgent issue but definitely something to read up on & consider.

It’s not hard, if I had known about it before hand I would have done it prophylactically… Limp mode is lame.

Yeah, it's more involved and more $$ than just "the unifilter mod," but potentially a permanent "fix."

The issue is that the ECU wants to see & execute a certain sequence of actions related to the SAIS on every startup & shutdown. If the ECU isn't kept happy -- either with a working stock SAIS system, or with a custom-designed electronic solution to make the ECU think the SAIS sequence has been executed -- then the truck will throw codes and/or possibly go into limp mode.
