Ok I'm sure this is probably covered somewhere in the forum, but I could not find it.
I've had my Tacoma a lil less than a year and learned quite a bit about it. However, unknown by me until after I purchased it, my engine has been swapped. And I'm not positive but I think other things such as transmission, hood, maybe even more things have been changed.
Anyway my question is, how can I look up the Vin number to find the specs and or watever else it will tell about my truck. Also I was wanting to find out my gear ratio also. Any help on this I'd really appreciate. I just want to find out all I can about what has and hasnt been changed also. Thanks in advance everyone!

Swap as in 3RZ to 2RZ? You should have an emission label under the hood indicating the emission family, that will tell you which engine should be there. All prerunner and 4wd are 3RZ if you’re truck is a 4cyl. All 2RZ are found in 5 lug.

As for your ratio and trans, you should have a door sticker on the driver door jam indicating what ratio and trans. Although, I seen this information being inaccurate for the ratio. Easiest way to find it is to pull the third member and count the ring and pinion or spin the tires and count the rotations. The trans will have a label on the side indicating what model it is.

The label on the door is missing. I do know I have a 2rz engine and its supposed to be 3rz. I'll take a pic of the door jamb info soon as I get free. But looking at it, my trucks supposed to have an auto trans. But it's a 5 spd manual. idk. I read a post about how to tell the gear ratio from the "missing" door sticker. Thought maybe the info on the jamb or the vin might could help if I knew how to search it. Also it's got the wrong hood because it's a 3rz hood, but it says federal emissions and I know I have Ca emissions.

Drop the VIN into partsouq - it'll spit out something like this: (my truck)

https://www.toyodiy.com/parts/q.html is also good for parts info, although I have had it give wrong answers a few times.

If you dig down to the differential section after entering your VIN, it should tell you what gear ratios the truck might have left the factory with. There are often multiple options, but in my experience the "lower" ratio (higher first number) is usually correct--eg, if it lists 3.56 and 4.1, the 4.1 is probably correct.

Where are you reading the VIN from? It sounds like your truck has had a lot of parts swapped, you might find different VIN stamps if you look around on the chassis or on different body parts.

Sounds like you got a mut, and if it's missing the door label, it's likely been painted at some point as well. I wouldn't take much stock in a vin output regarding gearing or much else for that matter. Really, for gearing, you just need to go with the old school method of counting rotations.

There are several different places the vin is on the body and frame. They are all the same.

Yea looks like that's wat I'll do. It's really low geared it seems to me. At 65 mph its wound out pretty high rpms. Sucks that mine has no gauge. But I like my truck. If I didn't I wouldn't have so much damn money in it already. and haven't really got started doing wat all I'm gonna do.

    At one point,
Then it wouldn’t matter what the VIN indicates because most people will make changes to their liking.

    Mines all jacked.
