New to the group. I need some help. I have a 2008 Tacoma that I just installed a new touch screen radio in it with a back up camera. I installed the wire for the backups lamp signal lead to ip2 pin1 as directed by the installation instructions, and also installed the wire from the radio for the parking brake signal lead to pin 5 of the plug into the 18 pin plug in the drivers fuse box, see pictures. The truck will not shift into any gears when selected now? Any idea of what would cause this? I have checked all of the fuses, nothing is blown, and even removed both of these wires, and still no gears! Thanks for any help.

You mean it physically won't move or your indicator isn't lighting up on the dash?

It first when into reverse and the light illuminated on the dash, now the gear selector moves easily, and the transmission doesn’t engage, the light move doesn’t move from neutral.

Sounds like your shift cable popped off either at the shifter end or the transmission end, most likely just coincidence and unrelated to the radio install.

I don’t think so. Interesting enough that when I use the gear selector shifting through the gears, the light on the dash stays at neutral. I never removed the gear selector during the radio install. I wonder if possibly either the brake , or parking brake switch shortened out, disrupting the signal to the transmission shift solenoid?

Can you feel the detents or does the shifter feel like it's not attached to anything.

Thank you folks for your help. I looked at it again, and oddly enough the shift cable did come off the shifter. I would think that there would be a c clip or something that would hold the cable to the shift lever ?

It's just a rubber grommet that holds it on, they deteriorate over time and no longer hold the cable on.
Luckily Toyota sells it separately from the cable where alot of manufacturers don't.
I think the part number is 33835-08010 but I'm not 100% on that.

Re: grommet failure: Is there good rule of thumb to reference or follow for a preventative maint swap on this part? I'm thinking 100,000 miles adds up to a lot of shift-lever changes over time and I'm in remote areas often during the spring fishing season up north. A failure of this simple part would mean a long walk or wait for the new part.

(looks like the part number is good):  https://autoparts.toyota.com/products/product/bush-transmission-c-3383508010

I think it's more an age thing than use, usually they are just disintegrated due to age.

Don't see it alot on Toyota's but GM and Ford the grommets go bad all the time and they are typically not serviced separately from the cable.

The newer Super Duties the 4wd cable has a grommet like that and you have to buy the whole shifter with the cable from Ford at over $400 although I think there are some aftermarket fixes.

Thanks! I'll check mine tomorrow. Is it under the shift quadrant? I was just in there lubricating the linkage and detents. What a difference it makes moving the lever.

Every Toyota I've seen it's the one where the cable connects to the shifter that fails, never seen one on the transmission side fail but I don't think they use one there.
Everything else most of the time fails on the transmission end.
