My son bought a used fiberglass Leer truck cap made for a 3rd gen Tacoma to use on his 2nd gen Tacoma.

This was maybe not his wisest purchase. However, he is young and this won't be the worst mistake he makes in his life.

It sorta fits now, but I'd like to make it fit a little better. I'm not shooting for perfect - just secure and durable. If it leaks when he's camping in it, then the dampness will serve an educational purpose.

You can see in my image below the current situation - the cap sides flares out, presumably because the bed on my son's truck is a little wider at the top near the tailgate than the truck it came off of.

I think if I attached strips of wood on the bed rails for the cap to engage with, we could pull that gap closed pretty effectively.

Does this make sense? Any suggestions for other approaches?

Bed stiffeners might pull it in.

Small lift, slightly oversized tires, well...
The tailgate looks fine, it's the cap that's got a problem.

OP: I think lifting it off the rails may help, not sure if it will be enough.

Yes - tailgate seems to be fine. The back of the cap is deforming because it doesn’t engage with the bed properly.

Yeah, I’d try firing strips, 1x3 might be too much, be best to custom fit, plane to the right thickness

All you need is a 2nd gen to third gen adapter.:D Time to make one yourself or buy a third gen bed. Or sell the shell and look for the correct one?

Yeah why not just sell the cap and get one that fits properly?

The not-quite-fitting one has things going for it... it's in good shape, it has a nice roof rack, and it's the right color.

Finding one that fits right AND has all of those characteristics isn't going to be easy. Doing a bit of adapting and keeping an eye out for the perfect cap seems like the way to go for now.

I'd be posting it for sale and looking for the correct one. I actually made a 50$ profit on my canopy after using it for a year.
