Yea converters are stupid money now, even aftermarket and alot of the aftermarket ones are crap.

If you can find low mileage used it may not be a bad route, like I said earlier though I'm pretty sure salvage yards are not allowed to sell used converters so your kinda limited to an individual sale.

We used to have decent luck with Cataran branded converters on the Asian market stuff but we got them from an exhaust supplier, I'm not sure how available they are to the general public.

my ford drivability guys check for rear cat monitor sensor fluctuation just sitting in the stall increasing rpms...
As DM93 said, dont waste your money on cheap cats, theres a reason theyre cheap...
Theres hardly any precious metal in them which is what makes them work...

I get more for recycling junk inactive used take-off ford cats from the smelter than what a new aftermarket cat would cost.....

i can find a catalog of them, but the only one for purchase i can find is this one https://www.ebay.com/p/191716570 just an ebay part but it says cataran..... i see some that say 3-5 year warranty like AP peformace that are similar in price per side, etc.... but i imagine that's a crap shoot to get one replaced if it smokes within the year.

Avoid the AP Exhaust ones, they are junk. We have had to warranty more of those than any other and their fitment is often terrible.

Not sure where you’re located or if these would even work but there are a set of front and rear in the 2nd Gen for sale section off an 08 x runner at a good price and were taken off almost new. Worth looking into if close enough. Being sold by Coupe in Texas I believe.

i figured at the price. sounds like you are a tech some where?

my thought is this, with everything being said. if im gonna go through the trouble of taking these SOB's off, im just gonna put new old stock OEM on wherever i can find them from assuming it comes to that.

buying used, trying to get take offs. shitty AP ones like i suggested above lol. i don't wanna end up back here in a few years....

the studs aren't known to break on the manifold for these are they? broken bolts are the bein of my existence coming from clapped out Subaru exhausts and ball joints lol.

yeah my idle numbers arent good, they only do okay at speed, which is why the hope of running it hot and hard wakes them up. if within the month its till being pissy. OEM is the route im most likely going to go

Yea I work at a shop, my boss never pushes OE converters (most people won't buy them anyway) and we are constantly having to warranty the aftermarket ones after a few years. Newer domestic stuff forget it, light will be back in a couple days with the aftermarket ones.

I've yet to break any on any Toyota but we don't deal with any rust here at all unless it's something that migrated here from the coast or the rust belt.
I've done quite a few Tundra starters and the manifold nuts typically come right off.

well i dont wanna warranty my own work cause no one pays me for it haha, so spending the cheddar for OE sounds better hearing that.

even being in the rust belt, this ones the least rusty vehicle i've ever touched in my years of helping friends and family here. so that makes me feel good. i didnt even need my bfh for the whole suspension job.

speaking of not getting paid, i should pay you at this point for all the help lol

Yea I would not be in this if I had to deal with rust every day I don't know how they do it in those areas where everything you touch you have to be worried about whether or not it's gona come apart without a fight. It's bad enough with all the plastic crap everything has now, bump the wrong thing and all of a sudden that easy job turns into a nightmare.

Nah I wouldn't hang out here if I didn't like doing it.

I've heard Magnaflow has pretty decent cats...any experience with those? they ave different grades depending on what you need or where you live. I get a p0420 every year right before inspection time...I've had good luck using cataclean the last couple years. My truck hits the 25yr mark in December and after that I don't have to worry about them anymore...may run the spacer just to get rid of the light.

Haven't used any on any Toyota stuff that I can recall but on domestic stuff it's a mixed bag like the rest of the aftermarket cats, may or may not fit without modification, may last years or may come back the next day.

Being a line tech for ford out here in San Diego, ive seen a handful of east coat exhaust systems that I wouldnt wish upon my worst enemy....
F150 exhaust manifolds are held onto the head using studs & nuts....
Some much errosion from the salt on these truck the nuts are suppose come off using a 13m socket...
Well they no-longer look hex shaped, theyre completely round & about the size of a 10mm,
Nuts & studs just molted together as one ugly unit....

I couldn't do it in the snow states, dont care how much they get paid....
Cant imagine having to extract 8-10 studs per side on a regular basis...
Ive done a few out here, navy f250 / f350, driving them on the beach..
    Not fun!
    The hand pain...

yupp, that was my subaru 2.5rs, she was an 05 as well. whole life in pa, finally sold her when i got the tacoma with 300k miles. i drove her for 12 years, it was my car since 16. but when anything broke, boy oh boy.

i spent 3 hours changing the starter working bolts out. my thermostat housing was "custom" because both bolts were snapped off in the block. if you looked at bolt wrong it just broke haha.

so fluid film and a prayer twice a year on all my vehicles now which are this taco and a 22 wrx

I ran a spacer on my o2 sensors for a few years. Never had a single issue for emissions. Used them on my Mazda too.

Eww yea F150 manifolds are a royal pain when everything goes right, I can't imagine having to torch every stud off and then extract them.

That was my bread & butter, loved doing exhaust work...
No fun though after the 3.5L eco boost came out, it was over after that & sucked the fun right out along with even more exhaust leaks to have to deal with...

Yea if you don't have visual or "sniffer" inspections and the cats aren't totally dead spacers work fine to keep the light out but they will fail a visual and/or "sniffer" inspection in most cases.

We don't even have safety inspections here anymore so alot of people don't even care how many lights are on lol, as long as the car runs and the A/C blows cold that's all they care about.
