Has anybody converted their auto truck to a manual transmission?
I blew my transmission last night and was wondering how hard a manual swap would be?

I think it has much more to do with the wiring and computer controls. Anything is possible, but will require much work, might be easier to fix with a used auto and sell it off.

    It's a compounding problem.

The manual requires a different main body harness. Which requires a different control module. The control modules are all 'paired/synced' to each other, so it takes a Toyota tech to program the new module to the old truck, at a minimum--and once you're involving a Toyota tech, Well that's like involving the president of Citibank to rob his own banks-- the chances of it working in your favor are slim.

Then there's the mechanical aspect. While there's space for the clutch, the entire ABS and brake booster system is different, and none of the holes for any of it are punched out, which requires very specific measuring. And the only way you're going to get tools in there to measure and drill is if you remove the big brake booster.

I also believe there's some bracketry under the dash that's missing. So best case, center console needs to be pulled so the carpet and possibly the seats can be rolled back to prevent welding sparks from mounting the bracket making the truck start on fire.

Fyi-- if any of what I said is wrong, someone will be along shortly to talk about it

TLDR; if this was a documented swap, it's likely feasible in 3-6 months with a competent wrench turner/fabricator/welder/wirer/tuner, and all the parts already on hand.

With no documentation to follow, I'd be surprised if even a full time, fully-featured aftermarket shop could produce a turn-key solution in under 2 years.

Do I want to see it? Absolutely. My auto long bed is begging for it. But I keep coming up with other ways to blow $60k

    It’s not practical.

I don't think 90% of the stuff I did to my truck is practical. I don't care

Perhaps practical isn't the right word.

Wanting to do a manual conversion on a fun vehicle that was never offered with 3 pedals makes sense. It's costly but makes sense.

But wanting to do the same thing on a Tacoma when they make Tacomas with 3 pedals is ridiculous. I'd rather swap in a Chevy V8 because you can't go and buy a Tacoma with 8 cylinders.

Manuals are also geared differently in the event you do pull it off, Not sure how the shift bands would be without a regear and tune.

He doesn't specify his model. There has never been a 4 door long bed manual Tacoma in all of history.

I got an access cab sr5. I wish they offered the sr5 with a manual package from the factory
