So I have a question involving electricity. Lets say, for example, I know a guy that was recently hand digging a hole for a new mailbox and low and behold- a buried cable made it's presence know, in the best of ways. The cable was right in the way of where the 6x6 wooden post should have gone, so the best compromise at the time was to push the pole against the back side of the hole and cable and carefully back fill all 30" to keep the mailbox post nice and sturdy. That's how I was told the story... I'm just curious about if there's any generic guide lines that tells a guy how far away a wooden post should be kept away from any buried cables. I'll relay the answer to my buddy.

The short answer is probably 3 ft. if we're trying to do a good job.

The long answer from a construction perspective is that you want to keep your structure from possibly contacting the cable, either through freeze/thaw movement, subsidence/sinking, or water action or maybe through a vehicle striking the structure and pushing it into the cable.

If you have 30" in the ground, I would stay that far away so that the post never shifts or tips and levers the bottom of the post into the cable.

If this is just some wire the homeowner or someone ran for convenience, it's probably not critical but if it was to the pole from the house or a main line, I would be very conservative. Those are dangerous and expensive and sometimes they try to make you pay if you damage them.

I wouldn’t get anywhere near that cable.
If that has to be dug up, a backhoe is going to make short work of your mailbox.
So I agree with at least 3 feet but I bet cable separation, which I think is 12”, would technically be ok.
If you start throwing cement down, that’s a whole different ballgame..

Well my trip to Safelite was a bust . Apparently all my stone chips are cosmetic, and they will only do 4 , not 5 . The store manager said just replace the windshield if they bother you. None of the chips meet the criteria for a repair, even though I can see them and feel them with a finger nail. I will live with them until the windshield actually cracks or go to the auto parts store and buy a kit and do it myself. If it cracks it will be in January, sure as shit. I have not had good luck with replacing the windshield, I got my 05 replaced and it leaked, took it back 3 times, still leak :annoyed:

Honestly depends on what this mystery cable is. If its data i’d give it a wide berth but not worry too much. Fiber optic, stay tf away from because its expensive af to fix. Anything with power that can go boom shouldnt be anywhere near his mailbox, like a few feet away at a minimum and he shouldve out burial tape over it while he was burying it so the next dude digging sees it before hitting the wire. The utility owning it would make you be X feet away depending what/whom it belongs to.

I switched from Spectrum cable to Ziply Fiber last fall, since the Frontier cable service was bought out by a group of former employees, who replaced the all the Frontier equipment with fiberoptic cable. TDS Fiber, a new company, installed in-ground fiber with fast crews that provided us with stories to tell of cutting through in-ground sprinkler lines patched together with electrical tape. I called 811 for utility locates after marking the areas where my neighbor planned to put T-bar posts with towing service signs next to the dumpster truck and other service pull-through areas in our two condo parking lots. After the utilities had put down their markings, a contractor friend and I planted the two posts and signs, the neighbor supervising wanted the last post turned 90 degrees, so the sign would parallel the curb. As we drove that last post the second time, the lamp post nearby suddenly came on. Oops! All the other lamp posts on that circuit came on, too. In the middle of the day! The electrician came out the next day, and I was later told that the photocell had failed in that moment.
When I saw Mike's photo of the mailbox embedded in concrete, that reminded me of the years that there were a numbers of mailboxes bashed by guys driving through my folks rural area with baseball bats or other implements. Their mailbox was mounted on a a pair of cleated steel wheels with the steel flat bar extension, an old piece of horse-drawn farm equipment parked off the pavement in log cribbing.

    Happy day-after-hump-day-but-not-quiet-Friday.

The new interim boss seems to be keeping things in order around here.

Thanks for the advice about the mailbox post, I'll pass on the information. ;)

We are in the final stages of testing the long awaited 2TR Supercharger. The results from our tests are very impressive! We will be sharing more information and along with a release announcement very soon! Stay tuned!
LC Engineering email opened this morning... (The improved breathing with their exhaust header makes the truck less prone to stalling when stopped at traffic lights, with less rpm required to move, without the embarrassment of the clutch interlock start.) It's better with more driving of Barcelona Red, and I don't need this additional cost and complication...
I hope all will get through the nor'easter in New England. PNW will be in the 80s in a few days... after 50s and 60s with cold rain. Hoping the crappies will start spawning, Charlie

Finished the greenhouse. My wife is very happy, and I like it even if I'm used to more functional designs. It's really sturdy! That was my biggest concern but it came together nicely.

It's going to be a nice workspace and will shelter the bonsai trees through the winter, which is a big improvement over digging them into the garden each year.

We're going to fill the floor with fiber pots for the largest plants like tomatoes, and do smaller things like herbs on the shelves.

Got home late last night. Took advantage of this cool & cloudy day to get the Tundra waxed. Mother's Brazilian Carnuba. 2 coats on roof and hood, 1 everywhere else (all windows included).

Good Morning gents. Hope you all enjoyed the weekend and gave a moment for the sacrifices that provided it.

Step Daughter gets married Friday. Prep for this has consumed our lives for months. Why do we do this to ourselves?

Finally got out for a couple hundred miles on 2 wheels yesterday. Did a lot of good.

    What about all ya'll?
