Big brake kits and crawl control / mts?

I'm considering upgrading my brakes due to having increased the payload of my Tacoma. I am however worried this might effect the functionality of crawl control and MTS which rely heavily upon brake actuation and the ABS data.

Would substantially changing the clamping force of the front brakes by installing stop tech rotors and calipers throw the whole system out of whack?

 

Upgrading your brakes will not likely improve your braking performance.

In any case, if the brakes are OEM replacements (made for your truck), they should work fine. You can contact the manufacturer to make sure.

 

how did you increase the payload capacity of your truck?

 

I didn't?
I just have a significant load on it, close to 6000# when fully loaded with gear which puts a very noticable amount of strain on the brakes so I wanted to add larger rotors and calipers for better cooling

What do you mean by “noticeable strain on the brakes”? Are you measuring their temperature?

My 2016 T4R has PS front and rear disk kits, and so far, so good.

 

Thanks, I'll look around. My front pads still have a bit of life on them and aren't into the red yet. I need to pull them off and lube the hardware though as they're squeaking a bit. I also need to pull off the rear drums and inspect them

 

Brake fade happens when the brakes overheat. Are yours over heating? If so, under what conditions? The most common condition is a long descent and this can be eliminated by using engine braking.

 

I replaced to big brakes and also rear disc conversion. IMO I definitely see a difference. No issues at all. Keep partying

 

My personal experience is that I towed 2300 lb boat 380 miles while (unknown to me) the trailer brakes were non-functional. My truck is about 4700 lbs, so my combined weight was about 7000 lb. I noticed absolutely no brake fade or other braking issues other than having apply more pedal pressure. Larger brakes would have been no help because the friction of my tires on the road was the limiting factor.

My opinion - I dont think it would make any difference to CRAWL or the rest of it. Even when you add a BBK with "more pot" calipers they are usually only a small percent larger than OEM, and I think the truck will still track how fast and how far the wheel is moving to 'detect slippage' like it does.

 

Because none of us has any way of knowing the answer. However, as I said above, I think it’s safe to assume the parts will work if they are advertised to fit the OP’s truck. We have to assume the engineers at the brake manufacturer did their due diligence. It would be a huge class action lawsuit if it could be proven they didn’t.

EDIT: I’ve also never seen a post where someone reported a problem with aftermarket brake parts and traction control.

 

lol I was thinking the same thing.

Im not a 3rd gen guy, but in theory the ABS module controls both applying and releasing the brakes based on the tone rings / wheel speed.

 

Don't listen to the naysayers. I don't know how all the engineering works but I've got a Wilwood BBK on the front and the feel/performance is incredible compared to stock.

No problems with traction control or ABS

The improved 'feel' gives you the impression of better performance. Like he says in the above videos: tire friction is the limiting factor, which is why we have antilock brakes these days.

MotoGP racers, at any race, have something like 8 sets of rotors/calipers available to tailor the feel to the rider so he can get maximum performance out of his tires. At the very limit of traction, very minor changes in feel are the difference between staying up and exceeding traction limits and landing on your head. The rotor/caliper choices they have are different diameters, thickness, and material.

As for the OP's question: I doubt brakes will change how crawl, etc. will perform, as they are based off of wheel sensor speeds.

 

While I believe everything you've just said, for me it was money well spent. Even if it's just feel, it makes me feel much more comfortable and confident driving around my 6000lb brick.
