Orig owner, 2008, 4cyl, 2wd, stad cab, 5-speed, 220k miles, orig clutch. meticulous fluid and general maintenance, never off-road.

Noise only is noticed under one scenario, otherwise truck seems just fine. Seems to be very slowly getting worse over the last 10k miles.

On the interstate, 5th gear above 60mph cruising and shifting just fine. Clutch truck out of gear and into nuetral, take foot off clutch. Coast for a few seconds, depress clutch, it shifts smoothly back into 5th but at some point while engaging the clutch or just soon after, a good 'thunk' from the engine/trans/driveline somewhere. then back to normal shifting and driving.

Recent related work; engine mounts and trans mount were original and needed replaced anyway. I did that 3 weeks ago and did not change noise at all. Maybe 2 years ago I did the rear u-joint only.

Plan to crawl under tonight and wiggle front u-joint.

    Any immediate thoughts or ideas?

    THanks folks.

U-joint was my first thought as I was reading your description of what's happening.

Hey, hope you got this figured out and all is well with the truck. I'm trying to diagnose my own 03 w59. I just replaced the clutch and flywheel along with all the seals, bearings, and shift fork. Here's the story: I had just taken it backcountry 280 miles into the new clutch keeping that in mind I kept my shifts below 4k, maybe had 5 shifts at 4 or 4200 max. After we designated and setup camp we went out on a trail and still everything was fine no noise. The day after we got back is when I first started to hear the squeal when the clutch pedal is completely out, push the pedal in and the squeal goes away. I've done a fair bit of research and have found that squeal is either present or not with some of these transmissions. Only thing I'm still curious about is I get a singular clean but loud (it honestly varies in sound, maybe quiet maybe loud 50/50 shot) pop sound 7/10 times when I shift out of 1st to 2nd and 3/10 times going from 2nd to 3rd. My Question is if that thunk was rough and when exactly it occurred while you were shifting?
here is a link to the pop noise that I reference. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1N_N35XTPBzFiF__8D3SzCqbwQvFiV3tU/view?usp=sharing
