When checking out a used motorcycle you simply provide the money for the bike and leave it with them for the test ride correct?

I'd maybe take the title too, what's to say they don't bolt and claim you stole it? Or bring a friend to stay behind

We don't have titles but bill of sales which transfer ownerships at the registry, maybe I'll write the bill of sale up with a test ride stipulation.

I wouldn’t leave a stack of cash with a stranger. Around here people will typically let you test ride as long as you’ve got a valid motorcycle license, some might want a deposit depending on the value of the bike.

I've done it both ways. When I bought the F800GS we had already agreed on a price, so I let him count it ($7000 in hundreds.. he kept losing count too) while I took it around the block a few times. Two other bikes they've just let me take it for a ride. I guess I'm a trustable guy? I've let people test ride my bikes when I've sold them if their car is still there or whoever dropped them off is still hanging around. Hasn't been an issue in my limited experience.

It's in an area thats not really low income but has a variety of people, I plan on buying the bike basically unless there's something catastrophic.

You make a good point. I Think the only thing I can do is write up 2 bills of sales with a test ride stipulation, and if he disappears I at least own the bike.

I'm not really worried but its when you take zero precautions you get bit in a big city.

Schedule the test ride at the local Police Department. That way you have access to run the VIN to see if you are being sold a stolen bike. I bet you could also leave the cash with the PD for your test ride. Keeps you and the seller safe. If they get squirrelly about being around the PD for it, then they are probably not somebody you want to do business with.

    Trust no one.

I've done it a few different ways.

If it's one I'm buying I'll usually meet them somewhere on one of my bikes and leave my bike with them while I go for a test ride on the bike I want to buy. I've also had a friend go along with me in a car and the friend will stay behind with the seller holding my cash as a precaution.

If I'm selling I ask to hold their driver's license and at least half the price in cash with me.

In PA both parties must go to a notary to transfer the title so one of the parties usually knows where a local notary or title service is to take care of that.

same! could be fun to take the dirtbikes out and explore around. only down side is my klx only goes about 90ish miles on a single tank sooo idk how much i can do with it!
haha cant blame you there! my buddy use to live in kansas and was only paying 700 for the house they rented. but they recently got a house handed down to them after a family member passed and now the dude has a loan free house! lucky sum bich!
