I was wondering if I can swap these trim panels. Mine is the first one with just the two cigarette lighters. I’ll call it trim panel “A” for convo sake.

I would like to swap it with “B”
    upload_2025-5-24_22-4-53.png
    if not then “C”

I understand they have USB’s. Is it another plug wire harness I can add? If not, or I need to replace the whole dash harness, it’s no big deal, my aftermarket stereo has USB cords that I can connect to it and put in place of the lack of the OEM ones.

They should swap, and you can populate the switch blanks with whatever you want, for example USB ports that you can connect directly to your head unit. The trim piece may or may not come populated depending on where/how you buy it.

Here's a post I made about doing that by modifying an aftermarket USB unit to connect to my head unit - https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/how-to-lower-dash-console-dual-usb-dual-data.720871/

The cig/12v ports might require splicing or making a pigtail of your harness isn't long enough yo reach the new locations - not a big deal.

The two newer panels will fit. If I were you I'd go for "C".
The only issue is how much stuff that needs to be removed in order to get that panel out.

Its not terrible- if you're careful you can sneak it out without fully removing the rest of the dash. Head unit and hazards+clock and coin tray comes out with clips, loosen the adjoining panels, wedge them carefully with doorstops or plastic trim spudgers, pop the center console bolts (adjust parking brake if needed while you're there), and gentle gentle remove/replace.

I know I "watched" one of the threads on changing the panels but can't find the link at the moment.

Here's one of them with a quick search though (starting with post 235562, 2nd post on this page https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/what-have-you-done-to-your-2nd-gen-tacoma-today.6499/)page-11779#post-27902021
Several comments by people who have done it. I know it was kinda popular for a while so there should be more threads but the search can be a pain to use and I'm only finding a couple.

I put "C" in my 06. Removed the OEM USB port and installed an Amazon one, connected to my aftermarket stereo. Like others have said, there's quite a bit of work involved to get the panel out. I was removing my entire dash for another project so I planned accordingly and installed the new panel in while everything was already torn apart.

How long are the wires that run into the cigarette lighters? If they are very short and just barely fit length wise, then I’ll have to go with B. I just don’t wanna splice extension wires to meet the different length.

I don't remember having to extend the wires for the cigarette lighters but don't quote me on that..

Has anyone bought the OEM squares with the cutout for the USB? I like the OEM style as apposed to aftermarket. They fit so much nicer.
But anyway, I’d buy a couple blanks with cutouts for the usb and populate them with these. Hopefully they just snap in? But these are the ones that’s plug directly to the stereo.

That one might work, but I’d be looking more for a single population. That and if I did go with it, it looks like I’ll have to splice the pigtail end for MY wire to allow it to plug into my aftermarket stereo.

On this note, could I wire my backup camera into into this circuit, and have it turn on and off with a button? Since it’s an 08 it’s not prewired. I’ve heard of 09 and up being prewired. I’ve tried looking into adding the dash harness, and incab fuse box so that I can get a nice OEM look and finish, also while keeping neat. Also an OEM snob.

What circuit are you talking about? The 12v sockets?

Yeah just plug it into that. Since it will be behind the stereo, all I would do is add a button in place of the blank.

Are you adding an aftermarket backup camera or an OEM? Are you wiring it to the rearview as with OEM, or to your head unit?

The OEM style, displayed in the rearview, comes on when the truck goes into reverse, not via a switch, and requires a little more wiring.

I’d love to do an OEM camera setup, if you knew how to. I’d have to add a lot of wires though. The wire that runs from the firebox to the rearview, and the body harness that goes to the tailgate. Tailgate wire harness. That’s not including the other parts required.
