    Good afternoon, everyone.

I bought my first Tacoma last week, and I’ve been lurking through this forum trying to learn more about it. I love the truck overall, and I’ve learned quite a bit from some of the threads on here.

I bought it to replace my aging Expedition to pull a small camper and boat, and I’ve been disappointed in the rear suspension. The camper is about 400 lbs on the tongue, which puts the axle 1/2” above the stops. The ride is enough to rattle my teeth out. Sounds like suspension help is needed, so I’ve been debating Timbrens or getting an airbag setup from Airlift or Firestone.

That got me thinking…how much headroom do I have on my rear GAWR? It’s rated for 3,000 lbs, and I had no clue how close I was getting when I hooked up the trailer. I couldn’t find a F/R weight distribution or axle weights online, so I hooked up the trailer and drove to the truck stop to find out.

This is my SR5 DoubleCab 4x4 with the upgrade package. Full tank, about 30 lbs of gear, and no driver.

Hook up the trailer, and I’m only at 2,580 on the drive axle. 400 lbs under GAWR and it’s right above the bump stops?!

The good news is I’m not overloading it, and I’ve got some headroom for gear and passengers. I’m a bit frustrated that I have to add support to comfortably carry less than its rated weight.

My big reason for posting was to share these axle weights for anyone who cares. I couldn’t find this anywhere on the interwebs, so my $20 in scale tickets may be useful to someone else who wants to know how much it can take without exceeding your axle rating.

    Is your camper 4,000#?

Because tongue weight should be about 10% of gross.

Unloaded with full fresh water tank is 3,200 lb even. I also pull a boat that is 5,200 lb, with about 350 lb on the tongue. Both tow straight is an arrow, and they each have functioning brakes.

I have no issues with anything but ride quality because I'm constantly on the bump stops. Acceleration, fuel economy, stability, and road manners are perfect.
