Greetings all. A few friends and Tacoma owners sent me in this direction. I recent bought a 2018 Toyota Tacoma and had nothing. But issues since. The dealership replaced the trans and put in a used one. Then that one went and they replaced with an OEM trans. Driving it for about a week. There’s this noticeable sputtering when holding steady speed between 40 and 60. Almost like driving over a warped section of road. Any thoughts, suggestions etc?

None. I thought maybe it was the tires. Too much pressure and just feeling every bump. But much more noticeable when accelerating and at those speeds.

Maybe like a torque converter shudder? Sometimes this is felt at lower speeds as when the tc is engaged and feels like driving over rumble strips?

Hope not. I just had the trans and tc replaced. Could it be the fuel pump or prop shaft?

suggestions, stop driving it & take it to the dealer, before you wipe-out your very costly cat converter if its a drivability issue....

Have you taken it back to drive with someone? Every so often other stuff would cause TC issues, like when the radiator/trans cooler would “leak” coolant into the transmission fluid. You can replace the trans and tc all day long and still have issues until the radiator is replaced.

they make special test strips to test for coolant in the trans fluid. I’m not say this is your concern.l but Iv ran into this on older models

I dropped the trucking on two separate occasions. First time they replaced the trans with a used. Then the torque converter went. Dropped it off again and they replaced the trans with a new trans. I’d imaging the mechanic would have spotted that?

Possible flood/wrecked vehicle? Pull the VIN and do a carfax check.

A reman Toyota trans comes with a TC. A “NEW” trans does not and would need to be ordered along with new unit. I’d make an appointment to drive with a technician.

    What’s on the odometer?

Is this an actual toyota dealership doing the work or just a used car dealer you bought the truck from?
Weird that they would opt for used parts unless you had issues with cost or some random lot you bought the truck from had some sort of shady warranty & they were picking up the bill.
    more details......

It’s a Honda dealer who also sells a ford and other used cars. I bought the truck with 58k miles. And opted for the additional warrantee. They covered the used one. When that one went the dealership covered it.

Sounds like you’re going back to leave the truck till they fix it or send it to a Toyota dealer

if they truly replaced the TC, there should be a toyota part# on your repair order invoice........
Im asking these questions, as I speculated this much.....

    Heres the deal now...
    "oem trans & TC"
Doesnt mean they installed a new toyota torque converter....
They may have transferred the TC from the used trans....

I cant even tell you if they truly bought a new reman "oem" trans from toyota....
They may have installed a new reman trans from some other vendor like Jasper, etc....
Used car lots aren't about taking care of the consumer, theyre about getting by as cheap as possible....

So who know what trans they actually installed from the info you provided.
& you could still running a used defective, tore-up, contaminated TC...
