Safe tie-in for running a transfer tank?

    I have a 15 gallon spare Titan sidekick fuel tank in my bed and was wondering if anyone is using a transfer tank that is tied into your main tank? I’m considering doing one that taps into the filler hose where I can transfer fuel with a mounted fuel pump on the fly rather than having to stop to manually do it. If you are, where does it tie into the main tank? Mine is a 2017 and I’m not worried about warranties, just safety.

    depending on regulations in your area, this is not advisable, as it's likely to cause an emissions failure, as the emissions self-test is likely to 'see' the additional capacity as a large hole in the fuel tank.

    in many area's that require emissions testing, that would mean a test failure, and the hassle of having to remove the system and get re-tested.

    Thanks for replying. You have some good points, and I may possibly just set it up to transfer fuel when needed only while stopped. Just curious if anyone has successfully done it before.

    Check out @Blueberry.Taco build and adventure thread. He added an auxiliary fuel tank to his truck. I have plans to do a similar setup in my. Just need to get settle in the new place and the garage cleared out. I have the tank and switch, need to gather the other components. Then get it done.

    Yup. I pump into the stock fill neck and do it while running with no issues other than confusing the “miles remaining” display on the dash.
    15k+ miles with zero CELs.
    Key is to make it a fully closed system. So definitely no open vents on the aux.
    which means you need to parallel several lines with the stock tank. with your aux tank above the stock tank you’ll need to figure out a way to not flood the evap system though (over filling the stock tank). That was easy for my setup as the two tanks are at the same height so the main tank just overflows into the aux if I forget to turn off the transfer pump

    Thanks for the reply! And yes, I thought I would need to have the fuel line set up with an anti-siphon pump, but didn’t know I’d also need a vent line to keep it a closed system, good suggestion.

    I was trying to look at your photos for reference, but was a little confused as to which line I was looking at. What did you use to tie both fuel and vent lines into the stock fill neck?

    Thanks for that reference, looks like he did some really good work on his truck. Like I said above, I’m trying to figure out what lines I’m looking at in the photos.

    You mentioned that you hope you can get yours done, what kind of work are you doing to your truck?

    Killer impressive work on this set up dude! I see that work and now regret my more simple approach!
    I was leery of adding any electronic actuator to a gas auxiliary but clearly it's done very well and safely on your truck.

    I settled with (an eventual) gravity feed into my filler neck from a 7 gallon custom aluminum tank (with a baffle for fuel slosh) in the bed (in the pretty much wasted space under the Retrax bed cover). Not functional while driving of course, but I'll just open the breather and the ball valve and let the fuel drain (slowly through 5/8 full hose) into the main tank after the truck is off and I am parked for the night.

    Everything is done but the filler neck work. Tank has been installed for over two years and I have had all the connection parts but haven't gotten around to removing the neck to get a threaded bung welded in. I have just been using one of those battery operated fuel pumps that screws onto the filler neck of the aux tank and I simply pump into my main tank. Aside from the hassle of hopping into the bed to connect and disconnect it has worked well enough to prevent me from committing to finishing the job. Fuel pump, hose, and funnel pack nicely into a small enough case.

    Pic: Ball valve on left lower, breather on right upper (that needs a cleaner mounting option). As an afterthought I cut an old bed mat to protect the front of the tank from potential damage when the bed is loaded with gear and I'm on rough trails. When full of fuel I will burp the tank with the breather valve from time to time just like you'd have to burp a Rotopax.

    I have tested the gravity feed by positioning the hose approximately where it would meet the filler neck (drained into a 5 gal) and to get the aux tank to drain fully I have to pump up my air bag only on the passenger side or park on a good angle cuz the fuel outlet is on the side and with the bung is about 2mm higher than the bottom of the tank. Design flaw understood after tank installed. :rofl:
