I’ve yet to see this anywhere on the internet, and as far as I knew the Tacomas never got hydraulic lifters in the v6. But I was at my Toyota dealership for another issue and wanted to get a valve adjustment done, I was told there is no point as I have hydraulic lifters. I thought they were wrong because so many people on here say otherwise, but I called a separate dealer to verify and they also said I have hydraulic lifters. So I’m not sure if this is only on the later years of the second gens, I have a 2014. Just thought that I would put this information out there and was curious if anyone else has ever been told that.

Not sure what they are talking about, only the dual VVT variant of the 4.0L found in the 5th gen 4Runner and 2010+ FJ Cruiser has hydraulic lash adjusters, all single VVT variants of the 4.0L have solid buckets.

That being said there's not really any need to adjust valve clearance on them unless your doing repairs on the cylinder head, it's a huge job that requires removal of the cams if any clearances need to be changed.

I’m not sure why they would tell me that then. Usually dealerships are quick to suggest extra work not decline doing what you asked for

Either they are uninformed or it's something they don't want to do, I suspect it's the latter.

Personally as someone that works in a shop I wouldn't wana do that job on my personal truck much less a customer vehicle, too many opportunities for something to go wrong then the shop would be on the hook for it.

I guess that makes sense. I knew the extent of the job but it just didn’t occur to me that a shop wouldn’t want liability on it. I guess I will keep letting my fuel economy get worse and the ticking intensify ‍♂️

I've read that even without hydraulic lifters, the valve clearance on the 1GR never goes out of spec by itself.

I need to just stop reading so much and making myself paranoid. Life would be so much better that way

The ticking is normal, it doesn't indicate any adjustment is necessary. It's just a characteristic of bucket/shim system.

If you want to quiet down the ticking, certain motor oils do it in my experience. Penzoil Platinum Euro 5W-40 makes my 4.0 really quiet.

Thanks for the recommendation, I’ve been wanting to try thicker oil this summer as the ticking seems to get louder as the weather gets warmer
