I'm in NYC and yesterday there was a 3 alarm fire that took down a few houses in the neighborhood. Unfortunately, my Tacoma was parked right out front of these (former) structures. The housing stock is old and likely full of asbestos and old building materials.

The good news: She still runs! No noticeable electrical or engine issues thus far.

The bad news: Despite all cabin windows closed, the interior smells like a campfire. Also, some plastic parts are warped and toasted.

Now I am trying to make sure I am not a sitting duck inside a moving health hazard. The fire dept was kind enough to thoroughly hose down the vehicle, however I expect smoke and particles to have infiltrated the engine compartment and underbody. I plan to have the engine bay steam cleaned and interior detailed ASAP.

I also understand that the 04 model does not include a cabin air filter. How can I safeguard myself from sucking hazardous particles in through the air intake. Are there parts that I can/should clean, flush, or replace.

Any comments or suggestions are welcome. Thank you all!

This is what insurance companies are for. I would think it would fall under the insurance of where the fire(s) were.

Putting apple slices under the seats will help absorb odor if you want to get a head start on that.

    What plastics were damaged?

    Thanks for the initial responses.

@six5crèéd Re: insurance, thanks, this is a good idea. However, I understand that the house where the fire originated was uninsured, as it was informally occupied by squatters. I can see adjusters from the other properties coming up with reasons not to pay me out.

I spoke with the fire dept. and there is a process where I can bring a formal complaint with the city comptroller for damages incurred. The boys in red clearly left cosmetic damage from leaning all over the vehicle. I'll get an estimate from my mechanic and submit everything.

    @Clearwater Bill Apple slices, interesting!

Any other comments on how to prevent airborne particles from spreading through the air system would be appreciated.

Plastics were passenger side mirror casing (electrical still works) and the passenger side signal lens casing. Again, electrical still works.

Crazy how resilient this vehicle is, as it was point blank to a major fire.

Get an ozone generator, you are in NY so they might limit you to what I call toy generators. I am in CA and had to travel to AZ to get the unit I wanted, They work wonders.

Around $26,000 worth of unleaded in the fuel tank.
+1 for the ozone generator. I have used them in cars that were heavily smoked in. After a couple of sessions you would never detect the smoke odor. Amazon has many options. I have tried those armor all foggers...not so great.

Ozone! I work in product development for a hot tub company. We run them inline with all sorts of tubs for water sanitization. Never used them in dry air though. Will consider.

    Another vote for insurance claim.

Ozone machine for odors and a professional detailer to shampoo the carpets and the seats.
