Who’s switched from Tacoma to Tundra?

I imagine once you make the switch over to the Tundra, you ain't going back. It's like going from a Honda Accord to a Lexus ES300. Night and day.

 

FWIW, I have owned two Flex-Fuel cars. I had them both for 5 years and put 100,000+ miles on both of them and never put E85 in either of them. I have nothing against them and it wouldn't be a factor in considering buying another one, except that it is virtually unavailable in my area.

 

I'm going to look at some Tundra's today. I really love my Tacoma, but bottom line is that it is a little too small for my uses.I always had full size trucks my whole life, and the mid size was an experiment to see if it would work for me, especially since full size has got so expensive. They have some good deals near me on SRs, so i'm going to test drive and crunch numbers.

 

Careful with SR's. They have some key differences from the rest of the mineup. Biggest factor to me was the tank is only like 22 gallons on the SR vs. 32 on all other models, DC at least I believe. Verify this info to be safe, but the SR is kind of neutered. Motor is detuned as well, but that honestly would not have swayed me nearly as much as the tank.

I would strongly advise stretching for a low option SR5 if possible.

I never drove an SR in my search, but even the base SR5 I took out was pretty nice and room wise it will knock your socks off coming from a Taco.

 

Thanks for the info, I appreciate it. I went and drove one today, it rode and drove pretty nice. I was suprised the steering was so light, and it rode like a pillow on some rough roads.It is going to be a tough decision, as I really like my Taco. But the Tundra is pretty amazing. I'm ok with the less power, but the fuel tank capacity is certainly a big drawback. I'm thinking I might hold off till later in the year to see what deals Toyota might have on end of year sr5.

 

Plus, they don't come with a brake controller even with the tow package, which is something I would want and need. And I wasn't thrilled with the colors available. Small thing, but to me, I got to pay for it and look at it, so I want something I really like.

The electric power steering takes some getting used to coming from the old school setup of a 3rd gen lol.

I always recommend end of year shopping if possible. I got almost 10k off my Tundra by buying it late December. I really like Toyotathon and Jan I guess.

Lunar Rock was the color I really wanted and almost bought an SR5 OR that way, but ended up going Midnight Black Metallic on my Platinum OR instead. I passed on a white Limiter OR that was white. I refused to pay the asking price and have to worry about the paint falling off. Toyota has a severe lack of good colors though IMO.

I’m not sure if the larger tank on the Gen 3 hangs below the frame like it does on the Gen 2.
If so, the larger tank may not be optimal if you play in the dirt.
I scrape every outing and it’s the reason why I don’t like the larger tank.

What do you all think about going from a Tacoma 2017 double cab long bed TRD sport 4x2 to a 2007 tundra SR5 crewmax also a 4x2. Both about 100k miles.

Looking for something with a lower payment and more room for another kid on the way.

 

As someone who made the exact same switch once I had twins. The crewmax offers significantly more room in the backseat. I say go for it.

 

Yeah lol one rear facing carseat in the tacoma is tough two you wouldn't have any room.

 

Plus the V8 upgrade is nice too!

 

Hello, I may be looking at a Tundra, 5.7 V8 Flex Fuel Version. 55K miles, 2018. Should i just stay away...or what?

 

Late reply here, but a 2018 with only 55k miles; dive in head first if it has decent service history and the price works for you.
Last year of the factory installed transmission cooler, if that matters to you.

 

I’ve had 3 tacos. 13 sr5 in Spruce mica that was a real head turner of a color. 17 sport that I sold to my father in law and he’s still driving and my 18 pro. Wife’s had an 18 t4r and currently has a 25 gx550.

I went from the taco to an f150 and couldn’t go back. Bought my 06 Cummins for heavy hualing and my go fast toy. Just bought a 25 limited trd or tundra. My favorite truck to date. I looked at the new tacos but they are wayyy to small with 3 kids.

Have the oddesey for hualing the kiddos and family rig but for hunting, fishing, pulling the boat and smaller trailers 5-8k the tundra just crushed the taco.

Can’t ever see going back. Just spoiled by the power, interior size and comfort and ride of the tundra compared to the tacos.

 

I am needing to move on from my Tacoma because I bought a travel trailer and the Taco just isn't quite up to the task. What Tundra options/configs are a must have for towing a roughly 5500 lbs trailer and about 1,000lbs payload? 4wd is also a must.

 

After having a very terrible start to 2025 and nearly giving up on life, I said fuck it and finally traded my '15 Taco in on a '25 Tundra Limited several weeks ago.
Loving my decision so far. That TTV6 is unbelievably powerful and I love having the larger truck with the new tech.
Once in a while, you just gotta live in the moment and don't worry about tomorrow.

I can’t speak for the 2022+ 3rd gen’s as I’m not too knowledgeable of the new platform. The 2/2.5 gen’s had a factory installed transmission cooler up to 2018. Any 2019-21 will need one added aftermarket. Not a difficult task, but a notable feature.

 

I had to install one on my 2019, not a difficult job. There's a member over on the Tundra side of the house that was selling the kit. It was around $1K if I remember correctly.
