Picked up a 2006 prerunner yesterday. I need some help in regards to step rails or running boards. I'm a senior and the wife is a near senior thick woman. It appears ? That the truck has factory boards ?
They are nice to look at but not real functional. They actually hamper my old self because they have no drop which means no toe spacing. They make it more difficult to exit even. Because we're on a shoestring budget my 1st thought is to fabricate something. But thats not a real pleasant thought. SO join the forum where all the needed braincells hang out. So the question is, is there any drop or standoffs known of ?
Or next up senior friendly rails that wont break the bank ? Please and thank you.

There have been people that have fabricated drop brackets for the factory steps, but if you're not welding them up yourself, you rapidly approach or exceed the cost of replacing the steps themselves. I would not recommend using donut/tube spacers (as opposed to fabricated brackets), because the steps mount to the body of the truck, not the frame, and the extra leverage and reduced contact surface are likely to cause damage to the truck.

You may want to look for "drop down" or "drop steps" - you can pick up imports (Chinese made) for about $200. They will obviously not be as stout as a super duper heavy duty fully fabricated set, but will very likely suit your needs perfectly well.

Here are a couple of random examples - https://www.amazon.com/OTHOWE-Compatible-2005-2023-ToyotaTacoma-Full-Size/dp/B09P1FBK9Q https://www.amazon.com/Running-Boards-Compatible-2005-2023-Two-Stair/dp/B0DHS85QD1

Just be sure they fit your cab size (Single/Regular, Access Cab, or Double Cab).
