It's probably one of the last trucks most people would consider. Chances are anyone who has any interest in a Gladiator and has the means to buy one already has.

I'm having my doubts that Stellantis or Ram/Jeep really planned to get their EV to market, almost like they copied the EV playbook right from an EV start up. The range extender REV what ever it's called seems much further along, but right now I can't see them bringing that market either, which would probably benefit Stellantis in the long run. Last week Stellantis was complaing about EV regs on their little vans and shutting down the London plant that builds them. NA they have been all in on EV, including dropping the Hemi, and then yesterday the CEO steps down.

For the record, I ended up getting a 2024 trd off road manual transmission. I think it shifts smoother than my 2023. I only have 2500 miles but all is well.

Looked for a bit but did not see why... any reason why Toyota went with a steel driveshaft on the manual vs aluminum for the automatic?

They did? I thought all the manuals have the 1 piece aluminum…is it a 1 piece steel?

Any photos of it by chance? I asked about “what driveshaft does your truck have” on Tacoma4G and only got medium helpful input. Was interested in what the manuals had but I don’t recall anyone with a manual responding.

Any 3rd gen owner that buys a 4th gen and makes the truck work with towing 4k loads, will forget the 3rd gen within a month. That’s how dramatically better the 4th gen is over the 3rd. The 3.5 is an OK car and crossover motor, as a truck motor it’s terribly anemic.

I’d rather have a cheap 2.7 city truck use only 5 lug, then try to haul or pull literally anything with the 3.5.

2 piece steel, talks about it here:

I was installing the Firestone Ride Rite airbags and can confirm.

I read this a lot about the 3rd gen. In comparison to my 2009, my 2017 was oddly good. Would lose it's rearend if you wanted at a 20mph roll, transmission shifted fine (I got used to the hang in the 09 and could predict it), and ECT actually made a difference. I liked it so much better than my 09 that I was always wondering if I got a test mule or something.

Possibly because of the rear gearing. The 4.30 in the manual will spin the driveshaft faster than the 3.58 in the auto. The material, length, thickness and style (i.e.: 1 piece or multi piece with carrier bearing) all makes a difference in maximum (critical) driveshaft speed.

You can play with Spicer's critical driveshaft speed calculator at This Link

Wow, not what I expected but good to know. The reason I made the thread on the other forum was because I was curious what I might end up with if I picked up a 2024+ manual. But I didn’t get any input on that.

My guess is it partly has to do with driveshaft length. The 8 speed auto is probably considerably longer, whereas on the previous gen truck the 6 speed manual and ratio were close to the same length, so they all used the same style of driveshaft, just different lengths to address the minor length differences.

I hear that the 2WDs (or maybe the DCLB 2WDs) have a support bearing as well and I’m guessing if that’s the case, they probably are steel too.

I think they ended up with longer shafts in the manuals than the autos and so it made more sense to keep it similar style to the previous gen with the carrier bearing. I’d rather have steel personally, easier to change u-joints than on aluminum. Not a fan of the carrier bearing though, seems like they go out more often than they should.

That sounds like a "I was drivin' Toyotas in Bagdhad when you were still in your daddys' bag". I'm enjoying this thread as I'm considering replacing my '09

34,870 miles on my 2024 as of today. No issues.

This transmission feels great, super solid and smooth

I have a '24 SR 4x4 6MT here as well. I'm at about 9k miles. I love the way it handles, and it is nice to be back in a manual. My previous manual was a '99 2.7L 5 speed. The only minor issue I had early on was that it would jam halfway into engaging 1st gear. Sometimes did same thing trying to engage R. It would go into the gear half way but not fully travel the extra inch to notch it in place. This has happened less and less. It still happens maybe once a week or 2, but I know what it feels like and it's easy to work around the problem - I can go back to N and go into gear after a couple of attempts, or re-cycle the clutch and it works. Or if I am on a hill I coast a couple inches and it shifts no problem. I am guessing it might be due to small manufacturing burrs in the gears that are still smoothing themselves out.

The dealer couldn't reproduce the problem at the 5k service, and since it's happening less and less, I am not too concerned about it.

I have almost 50k km on mine and it still does it. I go to N let out the clutch and do it again always goes in the second time

About 5k miles on mine. Maybe once in every 50 N-to-1 shifts at a red light or in traffic, it will balk and I have to reset by going back to N, releasing the clutch, and trying again. The same thing happens a little more often when shifting into R after a cold start. Seems par for the course.

Overall the 4G transmission is one of the better manual transmissions I have owned.

Mine does it, its fine. Im guessing the synchros were at a point not aligned or bound, and just needs to be reset.

Pretty common for this series transmission. 3G and 4G have the same 1st gear parts and I have been balked at many many times. Always solve it by doing the same as you. I had the stock 3G trans and now a 4G trans in my 3G and they both act exactly the same.

My reverse was sticky for a bit on the 4G, but it’s not anymore. Around 14k or so on it I think. Forget exactly what mileage I was at when I installed it.
