So I’ll start by saying I have a ABS and brake light on. I went in got a ABS scanner and I can see that it is the drivers front and passenger is rear sensors that are off here’s a photo of the code.

I tried to go cheap and get a pack of ABS sensors off eBay solve the issue. I found that while they look exactly the same they don’t fit in the ABS hole in which they mount. They make it halfway in and then it gets too tight. It’s right about where it slopes up and gets wider.

I tried sanding the plastic on one since I have a couple extras and then mounted it, but didn’t seem to fix any of the codes after resetting the abs with my scanner.

I started to give up and brought it to a well-known shop. They told me that they tried to put OEM sensors in, but they wouldn’t go all the way in and we’re blaming my aftermarket wheel bearings.

While this could be a possibility, I have run my wheel bearings for a full year without any problems from the ABS system or difficulty with the sensors.

I’m not sure exactly the trouble they ran into but I have a photo of the old ABS sensor (which had snapped off when removing) and you can see that it is not too long.

I was going to try rock auto and see if they send me something that fits better.

I’m curious if anyone else has had trouble with getting ABS sensors out for replacing new ones and having trouble putting them in?

Also, if anyone knows a better way of resetting the ABS system, and or getting the brake light off.

I’m not very experienced with debugging ABS system and haven’t found a lot online following my issues.

    Anything helps. Thank you.

As rusty as it looks I bet the hole and area around where the sensor goes is full of rust and needs to be cleaned out before the new sensor will go in.

As for the ABS there is no reset aside from clearing the codes but they will keep coming back until the issue causing them is fixed.

Do you have a set of dial calipers? Or a micrometer?
    If so measure the sensors.

As for the the hole, I used a gun barrel brush chucked in a drill.
I think I used a stainless steel brush, which can be hard to find unless you go to a place that sells black powered firearms. A brass or bronze brush will work, but it will take longer.

hey, seems like you were right I just use calipers in bored out with a 25/64 or 0.384 drill bit they now fit perfectly.

Just dealt with this problem. The Speed Sensor gets rusted in and breaks. Pulled the brakes, rotor, and hub. Cleaned out the hub (grease on the sensor) then used an appropriate sized drill to ream out the sensor hole. Plastic and some rust came out. Cleaned again and then buttoned everything back up. Then installed the sensor, it is a tight fit to get by the o-ring. Took it for a test drive and lo and behold the ABS must self test because it turned off the lights. OBTW these sensors are cheap, like $18. It’s the work involved to get them out without getting debris in the hub that’s hard.

    @Bobzilla2020,

Yeah huge hassle one on those how much is your time worth projects. For me it was worth it.

Although my rear sensor still goes off due to taking the wheel hub assembly off to remove debris from drilling.

This caused excess grease from my rear axle to sit in the cavity for the sensor. Which means my light pops on ever so often also resulting in abs system randomly kicking in at slow stops.

Cleaning the senor stops this for a day or two, eventually I’ll remove all the grease from the hub if I clean it enough

Just had to do another, this time a rear sensor.(2009 w 180K, ABS codes 34&39) checked the rear harness, no issue there. The nut holding the sensor on was rusted up solid. I suspect the rust was the cause of the error. I used a dremel tool to cut a slot the tiny nut (6M-1.00). Knocked it loose. Tore the old sensor body off and then used an 1 5/8 drywall screw in the sensor tip to lever it out of the bore. Scraped off the rust from the entire pad area that mounts the sensor. Installed a new sensor ($17) Tedious work but saved several hundred dollars. Shop probably would have replaced the axle bearing assembly
