    re: #1 opinion response
Yes you an illuminate the switch by tapping into the illumination circuit of another switch. Fyi, a diode only allows electricity to flow in one direction, it has nothing to do with stepping down the voltage.
    re: #2 opinion response
You could use the 12v power from the truck but you would need to lower the voltage to be the same as the battery that powers the remote.

Thanks a bunch for your response. I thought I could tap into the lighting circuit. And you are so right. I was wondering what all would have to be done to eliminate the battery and would it be a major hassle and or expensive?

I’ve bought the 12v step down to 3v but am unclear as to where to ground the remote since I’m deleting the battery. I don’t see a prong for the back side of the battery for the neg to go to?

I think NJ, all you need to do is locate which button you push to operate the door. Look at the corresponding semi circles of the one you push, then, with battery installed, take a piece of wire with both ends stripped and touch one side of the circle to the other corresponding circle half of the SAME circle and see if it operates the door. If not then test one side of the left half circle and touch the right side corresponding half circle and see if that’s it. I think it’s going to be each individual “circle/half moon” little circuit is your switch and you just have to “jump” or touch one side to the other and it will operate. I think it’s such a wide switch button that Geni wanted to make sure where ever you did windup touching the button, side or middle, it would have a set of contacts to be sure and operate. I hope this helps.

Thanks for this post on myQ. I will try this first. If this doesn’t work for me, I will do the cool remote mod by the OP.

    You're welcome!

Still using this same setup. Absolutely stellar. Love it with bikes and other times when you don't want to deal with a remote or keypad.

    I completed this project today.

I did not go the myQ route. Not difficult but way too many things to get/buy just to make it work the way I want.

I opted for the original concept in this thread to simply connect a momentary switch to the garage remote.

I added the 12v to 3v converter to eliminate the battery for the garage remote. Power was fed to it via a tap-a-fuse with a 5A fuse.

The kit works flawlessly. Very happy with it.

No more fumbling to get the handheld remote. It also helps eliminate the potential for a burglar to gain access to the house via the handheld remote.

Thanks to the OP, fillstrunner4, for this easy, cheap, and very cool project.

Thanks also to TacoTruck808 and DSRamsey for the garage remote battery delete suggestion.
