    Hello,

I am replacing the Toyota 84540-60050 Gear Position Sensor on our automatic. I was surprised to find it may be an interference fit. Nonetheless, it is on the shaft. I installed it such that the rear face of the slot for the fastening bolt (far right corner) is seated against the corresponding bolt boss on the transmission housing. The rear face of the sensor mounting slot I removed indicates this is the correct depth the sensor is to be installed to because this surface is smooth and shows no sign of oxidation.

This prevents the washer that fits under the nut from being in contact with the front (aluminum) face of the sensor. Is this gap between the rear face of the washer and the face of the sensor correct? If not, I will have a difficult time to pull the sensor outward such that the washer contacts the sensor face.

My old washer is rusty on both sides and I seeSensor_Face.jpg Washer_Front.jpg Washer_Rear.jpg Rear_Sensor_MountingSlot.jpg no sign of witness marks on either the rear surface of the washer or the front face of the sensor that would indicate these two parts were in contact with each other.

Please let me know. Not an easy repair...

No experience in what you are doing but have located the sensor/switch and that is not easy to get to while in the vehicle. Would be nice to see a picture of the shaft coming through the side of the transmission, but understand it is a hard place to get a phone or camera into. The only interesting witness mark I see is the indentations on the -04020 label.

Somebody else was working on this recently, sorry I can't point you to his thread. Perhaps somebody will pop in here with the info you desire.
