2005 Toyota tacoma speedometer issue

my speedometer sometimes does not work, theres days that i will driv with no speed indication and then it randomly will start working, then theres day when i start driving it works fine, any ideas?

Is your ABS light on or does it come on when the speedometer doesn't work?

If it is then you need to diagnose that first, if it isn't then it's very likely the Combination Meter (Instrument Cluster).

negative! it does throw the check engine light on and it gives a speed sensor code, i replaced the vss but that didnt work

 

Auto trucks don't use a Vehicle Speed Sensor, read the post I linked above (scroll down to P0500).

by chance can you recommend where to start, is it check the gauges? sorry

 

Quick and dirty check when it's not working tap on the cluster, if it starts working again it's in the cluster (most likely a cracked solder joint).
