I remain of the opinion that nearly all types will be wear items or consumables. Security differences can exist but I have this insight from my work where I can see parking lot and other security cameras in a grocery store chain. If someone wants to steal, they will do it really fast for all types of bed covers and break into passenger compartments too.

My guess is Fas-Top has patents or a trademark to be the only one like it, but I keep being SO happy with that choice. The past week had another example. While associates who had a topper and a hard type tonneau had limitations, it was minuted or less for me to have any or all of a tonneau, open bed, and quickly have a topper to shelter and carry stuff when raindrops were felt.

you ever had any leaking issues with it? i have a Bakflip on my patrol truck (cop, Ram 1500) and it’s the biggest piece of shit. it can barely rain outside and it will get water pooling inside. and the amount of dust intrusion is ridiculous.

I remember both of mine being almost water proof. I would say like water resistant. I drove through the outskirts of a hurricane once in NC, ironically that was when I had my Ram 1500, and it was legit raining so hard that you couldn’t see (we were being evacuated while on vacation). I drove through like an hour of that and all of my cargo was basically still dry. There was a tiny bit of water in the bed but it stayed between the grooves in the bed liner so nothing really got wet.

I do remember though that when I had both bakflips installed, I had a shop do it and they drilled the holes for the drainage tubes and all that fancy stuff. Not sure if yours has that. I can’t speak too much to dirt/dust intrusion because I didn’t really start seriously off-roading until after I got rid of the bakflip.

i’d tweak it but it’s county property and i don’t want to fuck something up. i do know that the back seal by the window is hanging down underneath the cover so i’m sure the up fitting shop just did a shit job installing it.

it’s unfortunate because i have dive gear and a dry suit in the bed and it gets mildewy as fuck.

Ugh yeah that’s a bummer. I feel like a diamondback would be the gold standard for dust/water proofing the bed. I wound up just getting an ARE shell because I needed more storage anyway.

i don’t blame you on the ARE shell. eventually i’m going to have a shell when i get a GFC but i have to prioritize buying a house first lmao.

I have a lomax tri fold loprofile hard cover. Its cool they have the one that can stand up now, mine cannot. I do have to take it on and off in the summer to put mountainbikes in the bed but my old mtb I didn't have to. New one is just larger. But I also have a hitch rack. The cover is faster to take on/off and lighter than the rack. Ive had it on for close to 6 years now and do get some bed moisture because I didn't do the tailgate weatherstrip. Now the rubber is starting to wear down and it leaks but minimally.

The big reason I went hard is security. While you can break into it, it will take a bit more than a knife. Back to inconvenient slows theives down. I also live in WI and the truck does not live in a garage. I transport my firegear and ski patrol gear during the year. My fire gear bag fits under the cover and I still get decent access to the rails, even though I don't use them often. My board barely fits but it works. I can also put 10' kayaks in the bed without removing the cover. There are times that I need it off but not frequently. My 65 yeti slides under it. I know you can get roll ups that are nicer but I also got my cover for $400 barely used. I have seriously considered the diamondback hard cover but the price was h8gher and I can get my cover off in less than 60 seconds.
My cover is also metal, but won't hold as much weight as the diamondback. The trifold is nice to store too. I can slightly open it and it can freestand in the garage.

I will say in winter, I have had my cover freeze shut, but thats usually when I forget to run some wd40 silicone spray along the sides. But I do that to my door seals also. I have also never damaged my tailgate key pushing it between the cover and top of the truck bed!

Mine is also pretty low profile which is nice. I keep thinking about trying a new brand when mine wears out just to see what else there is but I have been super happy with mine... I initially wanted a metal retractable cover but cost and loss of bed space weren't as nice.

I also am worried if I do run a deckd system I will unfortunately NEED a topper or my fire gear wont fit :(

Any more specific questions feel free to ask!

Oh yeah can’t go wrong with a GFC. I’m also doing some house stuff too before I get any more truck stuff so I feel your pain.
