No progress yesterday, drove to the beach for a nice walk, picnic, and some wine tasting with my wife.

Today I got all of the parts cut out. This is planned to be a shoe rack that will live next to a door.

The cherry will be the top. The two solid maple panels will be the sides. I am trying to decide if I will do anything to the sides. My son suggest a negative cutout of Lake Tahoe or a cherry Lake Tahoe panel glued to the sides. Kind of like the cutout on my shop cabinet. This is a gift for my sister. She has a place in South Lake Tahoe that we all stay at every summer.

Where do you source the metal part from? What's the diameter?

Do you do any epoxy? Might be cool to have a cut out of the lake filled with blue tinted epoxy

No epoxy for me. I really don’t like working with it. I will likely leave them solid.

I have never made any, but you can source the parts pretty cheap from Amazon. Search DIY bottle opener or bottle opener insert.

Large cutouts reduce overall strength of the piece. If you did epoxy (it can be a royal pain, I know from my limited experience) keeping it shallow (1/8 inch) would be best. But you could, if you have the control, route the outside-shape-edge into the wood for a subtle accent.

Just to check with the people experienced with table saws ... one of the comments in the site-reviews makes an interesting statement. I take the good ones and bad ones with the "on the internet" consideration, but this one comment seems factual enough to ask. The review observed that the table saw top only has one slot, so (to quote the review, basically) "no sleds, then".

Would a table saw with only one slot be truly not-useful for custom-sleds, and thus less useful overall? The logic is there, but that brand of saw seems to sell in enough numbers that some people apparently just do not care.

I am prepared/planning to pay for a portable table saw with 2 slots, but perhaps I am just looking for validation that I can foresee limits and capabilities. Besides, getting an answer of simply "yes" is rare in this thread and will likely yield details.

I’ll respond in an interactive way so you can come to your own conclusion.

How do you square the blade on these type of table saws?

Lastly, what are you using as runners to go into the miter slot grooves to slide the sled?

hmm . . . initial thought with a single miter slot is a sled is possible, but maybe just not one of those monster-sized sleds. also, depending on types of cuts, might have some slight limitations with using feather boards or other mitery attachments.

Ryobi. From the cheapest $225 portable model quite a way up through the $600 portables.

Not sure exactly which sleds right now ... but I think I know the general theory. And it seems that two sliding positions makes more stale movement ... car vs motorcycle. And as to material used ... I do not know for now but can imagine stainless steel could damage the aluminum (yeah ... "aluminum") table top where wood can wear down too easily and make the sled pointless because it is no longer accurate.

But if two slots is at least a better starting point that is what I prefer.
